Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 39-40 Sanskrit: तदुपद्रवमाज्ञाय लोकस्य वसु लुम्पताम् ।भर्तर्युपरते तस्मिन्नन्योन्यं च जिघांसताम् ॥ ३९ ॥चोरप्रायं जनपदं हीनसत्त्वमराजकम् ।लोकान्नावारयञ्छक्ता अपि तद्दोषदर्शिन: ॥ ४० ॥ ITRANS: tad upadravam ājñāyalokasya vasu lumpatāmbhartary uparate tasminnanyonyaṁ ca jighāṁ-satām Translation: Upon seeing the dust storm, the saintly persons could understand that there were a great deal of irregularities due to the death of King Vena. Without government, the state was devoid of law and order, and consequently there was a great uprising of murderous thieves and rogues, who were plundering the riches of the people in general....

Naḍvalā, the wife of Cākṣuṣa Manu, gave birth to the following faultless sons: Puru, Kutsa, Trita, Dyumna, Satyavān, Ṛta, Vrata, Agniṣṭoma, Atīrātra, Pradyumna, Śibi and Ulmuka....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 49-50 Sanskrit: पौर्णमास्यां सिनीवाल्यां द्वादश्यां श्रवणेऽथवा ।दिनक्षये व्यतीपाते सङ्‌क्रमेऽर्कदिनेऽपि वा ॥ ४९ ॥श्रावयेच्छ्रद्दधानानां तीर्थपादपदाश्रय: ।नेच्छंस्तत्रात्मनात्मानं सन्तुष्ट इति सिध्यति ॥ ५० ॥ ITRANS: paurṇamāsyāṁ sinīvālyāṁdvādaśyāṁ śravaṇe ’thavādina-kṣaye vyatīpātesaṅkrame ’rkadine ’pi vā Translation: Persons who have completely taken shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord should recite this narration of Dhruva Mahārāja without taking remuneration. Specifically, recitation is recommended on the full-moon or dark-moon day, on the day after Ekādaśī, on the appearance of the Śravaṇa star, at the end of a particular tithi, or the occasion of Vyatīpāta, at the end of the month, or on Sunday....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 11-12 Sanskrit: तत: परिघनिस्त्रिंशै: प्रासशूलपरश्वधै: । शक्त्यृष्टिभिर्भुशुण्डीभिश्चित्रवाजै: शरैरपि ॥ ११ ॥ अभ्यवर्षन् प्रकुपिता: सरथं सहसारथिम् । इच्छन्तस्तत्प्रतीकर्तुमयुतानां त्रयोदश ॥ १२ ॥ ITRANS: tataḥ parigha-nistriṁśaiḥprāsaśūla-paraśvadhaiḥśakty-ṛṣṭibhir bhuśuṇḍībhiścitra-vājaiḥ śarair api Translation: The Yakṣa soldiers were 130,000 strong, all greatly angry and all desiring to defeat the wonderful activities of Dhruva Mahārāja. With full strength they showered upon Mahārāja Dhruva, along with his chariot and charioteer, various types of feathered arrows, parighas [iron bludgeons], nistriṁśas [swords], prāsaśūlas [tridents], paraśvadhas [lances], śaktis [pikes], ṛṣṭis [spears] and bhuśuṇḍī weapons....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 18-19 Sanskrit: भल्लै: सञ्छिद्यमानानां शिरोभिश्चारुकुण्डलै: ।ऊरुभिर्हेमतालाभैर्दोर्भिर्वलयवल्गुभि: ॥ १८ ॥हारकेयूरमुकुटैरुष्णीषैश्च महाधनै: ।आस्तृतास्ता रणभुवो रेजुर्वीरमनोहरा: ॥ १९ ॥ ITRANS: bhallaiḥ sañchidyamānānāṁśirobhiś cāru-kuṇḍalaiḥūrubhir hema-tālābhairdorbhir valaya-valgubhiḥ Translation: The great sage Maitreya continued: My dear Vidura, the heads of those who were cut to pieces by the arrows of Dhruva Mahārāja were decorated very beautifully with earrings and turbans. The legs of their bodies were as beautiful as golden palm trees, their arms were decorated with golden bracelets and armlets, and on their heads there were very valuable helmets bedecked with gold....

Taking with him many learned brāhmaṇas, all the elderly personalities of his family, his officers, his ministers and his immediate friends, he immediately left the city....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 42-43 Sanskrit: तं द‍ृष्ट्वोपवनाभ्याश आयान्तं तरसा रथात् । अवरुह्य नृपस्तूर्णमासाद्य प्रेमविह्वल: ॥ ४२ ॥ परिरेभेऽङ्गजं दोर्भ्यां दीर्घोत्कण्ठमना: श्वसन् । विष्वक्सेनाङ्‌घ्रिसंस्पर्शहताशेषाघबन्धनम् ॥ ४३ ॥ ITRANS: taṁ dṛṣṭvopavanābhyāśaāyāntaṁ tarasā rathātavaruhya nṛpas tūrṇamāsādya prema-vihvalaḥ Translation: Upon seeing Dhruva Mahārāja approaching the neighboring small forest, King Uttānapāda with great haste got down from his chariot. He had been very anxious for a long time to see his son Dhruva, and therefore with great love and affection he went forward to embrace his long-lost boy....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 58-59 Sanskrit: ध्रुवाय पथि द‍ृष्टाय तत्र तत्र पुरस्त्रिय: । सिद्धार्थाक्षतदध्यम्बुदूर्वापुष्पफलानि च ॥ ५८ ॥ उपजह्रु: प्रयुञ्जाना वात्सल्यादाशिष: सती: । श‍ृण्वंस्तद्वल्गुगीतानि प्राविशद्भवनं पितु: ॥ ५९ ॥ ITRANS: dhruvāya pathi dṛṣṭāyatatra tatra pura-striyaḥsiddhārthākṣata-dadhy-ambu-dūrvā-puṣpa-phalāni ca Translation: Thus as Dhruva Mahārāja passed on the road, from every place in the neighborhood all the gentle household ladies assembled to see him, and out of maternal affection they offered their blessings, showering him with white mustard seed, barley, curd, water, newly grown grass, fruits and flowers....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 59-60 Sanskrit: एवं कायेन मनसा वचसा च मनोगतम् ।परिचर्यमाणो भगवान् भक्तिमत्परिचर्यया ॥ ५९ ॥पुंसाममायिनां सम्यग्भजतां भाववर्धन: ।श्रेयो दिशत्यभिमतं यद्धर्मादिषु देहिनाम् ॥ ६० ॥ ITRANS: evaṁ kāyena manasāvacasā ca mano-gatamparicaryamāṇo bhagavānbhaktimat-paricaryayā Translation: Anyone who thus engages in the devotional service of the Lord, seriously and sincerely, with his mind, words and body, and who is fixed in the activities of the prescribed devotional methods, is blessed by the Lord according to his desire....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 14-15 Sanskrit: मन्दारै: पारिजातैश्च सरलैश्चोपशोभितम् ।तमालै: शालतालैश्च कोविदारासनार्जुनै: ॥ १४ ॥चूतै: कदम्बैर्नीपैश्च नागपुन्नागचम्पकै: ।पाटलाशोकबकुलै: कुन्दै: कुरबकैरपि ॥ १५ ॥ ITRANS: mandāraiḥ pārijātaiś casaralaiś copaśobhitamtamālaiḥ śāla-tālaiś cakovidārāsanārjunaiḥ Translation: The whole of Kailāsa Hill is decorated with various kinds of trees, of which the following names may be mentioned: mandāra, pārijāta, sarala, tamāla, tāla, kovidāra, āsana, arjuna, āmra-jāti [mango], kadamba, dhūli-kadamba, nāga, punnāga, campaka, pāṭala, aśoka, bakula, kunda and kurabaka....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 19-20 Sanskrit: कुमुदोत्पलकह्लारशतपत्रवनर्द्धिभि: ।नलिनीषु कलं कूजत्खगवृन्दोपशोभितम् ॥ १९ ॥मृगै: शाखामृगै: क्रोडैर्मृगेन्द्रैर्ऋ क्षशल्यकै: ।गवयै: शरभैर्व्याघ्रै रुरुभिर्महिषादिभि: ॥ २० ॥ ITRANS: kumudotpala-kahlāra-śatapatra-vanarddhibhiḥnalinīṣu kalaṁ kūjat-khaga-vṛndopaśobhitam Translation: There are different kinds of lotus flowers, such as kumuda, utpala and śatapatra. The forest appears to be a decorated garden, and the small lakes are full of various kinds of birds who whisper very sweetly. There are many kinds of other animals also, like deer, monkeys, boars, lions, ṛkṣas, śalyakas, forest cows, forest asses, tigers, small deer, buffalo and many other animals, who are fully enjoying their lives....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 14-15 Sanskrit: प्रेतावासेषु घोरेषु प्रेतैर्भूतगणैर्वृत: ।अटत्युन्मत्तवन्नग्नो व्युप्तकेशो हसन् रुदन् ॥ १४ ॥चिताभस्मकृतस्‍नान: प्रेतस्रङ्‌न्रस्थिभूषण: ।शिवापदेशो ह्यशिवो मत्तो मत्तजनप्रिय: ।पति: प्रमथनाथानां तमोमात्रात्मकात्मनाम् ॥ १५ ॥ ITRANS: pretāvāseṣu ghoreṣupretair bhūta-gaṇair vṛtaḥaṭaty unmattavan nagnovyupta-keśo hasan rudan Translation: He lives in filthy places like crematoriums, and his companions are the ghosts and demons. Naked like a madman, sometimes laughing and sometimes crying, he smears crematorium ashes all over his body....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 46-47 Sanskrit: त एते मुनय: क्षत्तर्लोकान्सर्गैरभावयन् ।एष कर्दमदौहित्रसन्तान: कथितस्तव ॥ ४६ ॥श‍ृण्वत: श्रद्दधानस्य सद्य: पापहर: पर: ।प्रसूतिं मानवीं दक्ष उपयेमे ह्यजात्मज: ॥ ४७ ॥ ITRANS: ta ete munayaḥ kṣattarlokān sargair abhāvayaneṣa kardama-dauhitra-santānaḥ kathitas tava Translation: My dear Vidura, the population of the universe was thus increased by the descendants of these sages and the daughters of Kardama. Anyone who hears the descriptions of this dynasty with faith will be relieved from all sinful reactions....
