Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 42 Sanskrit: अक्षं दशप्राणमधर्मधर्मौचक्रेऽभिमानं रथिनं च जीवम् ।धनुर्हि तस्य प्रणवं पठन्तिशरं तु जीवं परमेव लक्ष्यम् ॥ ४२ ॥ ITRANS: akṣaṁ daśa-prāṇam adharma-dharmaucakre ’bhimānaṁ rathinaṁ ca jīvamdhanur hi tasya praṇavaṁ paṭhantiśaraṁ tu jīvaṁ param eva lakṣyam Translation: The ten kinds of air acting within the body are compared to the spokes of the chariot’s wheels, and the top and bottom of the wheel itself are called religion and irreligion....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 45 Sanskrit: यावन्नृकायरथमात्मवशोपकल्पंधत्ते गरिष्ठचरणार्चनया निशातम् ।ज्ञानासिमच्युतबलो दधदस्तशत्रु:स्वानन्दतुष्ट उपशान्त इदं विजह्यात् ॥ ४५ ॥ ITRANS: yāvan nṛ-kāya-ratham ātma-vaśopakalpaṁdhatte gariṣṭha-caraṇārcanayā niśātamjñānāsim acyuta-balo dadhad asta-śatruḥsvānanda-tuṣṭa upaśānta idaṁ vijahyāt Translation: As long as one has to accept a material body, with its different parts and paraphernalia, which are not fully under one’s control, one must have the lotus feet of his superiors, namely his spiritual master and the spiritual master’s predecessors....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 46 Sanskrit: नोचेत्प्रमत्तमसदिन्द्रियवाजिसूतानीत्वोत्पथं विषयदस्युषु निक्षिपन्ति ।ते दस्यव: सहयसूतममुं तमोऽन्धेसंसारकूप उरुमृत्युभये क्षिपन्ति ॥ ४६ ॥ ITRANS: nocet pramattam asad-indriya-vāji-sūtānītvotpathaṁ viṣaya-dasyuṣu nikṣipantite dasyavaḥ sahaya-sūtam amuṁ tamo ’ndhesaṁsāra-kūpa uru-mṛtyu-bhaye kṣipanti Translation: Otherwise, if one does not take shelter of Acyuta and Baladeva, then the senses, acting as the horses, and the intelligence, acting as the driver, both being prone to material contamination, inattentively bring the body, which acts as the chariot, to the path of sense gratification....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 47 Sanskrit: प्रवृत्तं च निवृत्तं च द्विविधं कर्म वैदिकम् ।आवर्तते प्रवृत्तेन निवृत्तेनाश्नुतेऽमृतम् ॥ ४७ ॥ ITRANS: pravṛttaṁ ca nivṛttaṁ cadvi-vidhaṁ karma vaidikamāvartate pravṛttenanivṛttenāśnute ’mṛtam Translation: According to the Vedas, there are two kinds of activities — pravṛtti and nivṛtti. Pravṛtti activities involve raising oneself from a lower to a higher condition of materialistic life, whereas nivṛtti means the cessation of material desire. Through pravṛtti activities one suffers from material entanglement, but by nivṛtti activities one is purified and becomes fit to enjoy eternal, blissful life....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 52 Sanskrit: निषेकादिश्मशानान्तै: संस्कारै: संस्कृतो द्विज: ।इन्द्रियेषु क्रियायज्ञान् ज्ञानदीपेषु जुह्वति ॥ ५२ ॥ ITRANS: niṣekādi-śmaśānāntaiḥsaṁskāraiḥ saṁskṛto dvijaḥindriyeṣu kriyā-yajñānjñāna-dīpeṣu juhvati Translation: A twice-born brāhmaṇa [dvija] gains his life by the grace of his parents through the process of purification known as garbhādhāna. There are also other processes of purification, until the end of life, when the funeral ceremony [antyeṣṭi-kriyā] is performed. Thus in due course a qualified brāhmaṇa becomes uninterested in materialistic activities and sacrifices, but he offers the sensual sacrifices, in full knowledge, into the working senses, which are illuminated by the fire of knowledge....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 53 Sanskrit: इन्द्रियाणि मनस्यूर्मौ वाचि वैकारिकं मन: ।वाचं वर्णसमाम्नाये तमोङ्कारे स्वरे न्यसेत् ।ओङ्कारं बिन्दौ नादे तं तं तु प्राणे महत्यमुम् ॥ ५३ ॥ ITRANS: indriyāṇi manasy ūrmauvāci vaikārikaṁ manaḥvācaṁ varṇa-samāmnāyetam oṁkāre svare nyasetoṁkāraṁ bindau nāde taṁtaṁ tu prāṇe mahaty amum Translation: The mind is always agitated by waves of acceptance and rejection. Therefore all the activities of the senses should be offered into the mind, which should be offered into one’s words....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 56 Sanskrit: य एते पितृदेवानामयने वेदनिर्मिते ।शास्त्रेण चक्षुषा वेद जनस्थोऽपि न मुह्यति ॥ ५६ ॥ ITRANS: ya ete pitṛ-devānāmayane veda-nirmiteśāstreṇa cakṣuṣā vedajana-stho ’pi na muhyati Translation: Even though situated in a material body, one who is fully aware of the paths known as pitṛ-yāna and deva-yāna, and who thus opens his eyes in terms of Vedic knowledge, is never bewildered in this material world....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 57 Sanskrit: आदावन्ते जनानां सद् बहिरन्त: परावरम् ।ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं वचो वाच्यं तमो ज्योतिस्त्वयं स्वयम् ॥ ५७ ॥ ITRANS: ādāv ante janānāṁ sadbahir antaḥ parāvaramjñānaṁ jñeyaṁ vaco vācyaṁtamo jyotis tv ayaṁ svayam Translation: He who exists internally and externally, at the beginning and end of everything and of all living beings, as that which is enjoyable and as the enjoyer of everything, superior and inferior, is the Supreme Truth....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 58 Sanskrit: आबाधितोऽपि ह्याभासो यथा वस्तुतया स्मृत: ।दुर्घटत्वादैन्द्रियकं तद्वदर्थविकल्पितम् ॥ ५८ ॥ ITRANS: ābādhito ’pi hy ābhāsoyathā vastutayā smṛtaḥdurghaṭatvād aindriyakaṁtadvad artha-vikalpitam Translation: Although one may consider the reflection of the sun from a mirror to be false, it has its factual existence. Accordingly, to prove by speculative knowledge that there is no reality would be extremely difficult. Purport: The impersonalists try to prove that the varieties in the vision of the empiric philosopher are false....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 59 Sanskrit: क्षित्यादीनामिहार्थानां छाया न कतमापि हि ।न सङ्घातो विकारोऽपि न पृथङ्‌‌नान्वितो मृषा ॥ ५९ ॥ ITRANS: kṣity-ādīnām ihārthānāṁchāyā na katamāpi hina saṅghāto vikāro ’pina pṛthaṅ nānvito mṛṣā Translation: In this world there are five elements — namely earth, water, fire, air and ether — but the body is not a reflection of them, nor a combination or transformation of them. Because the body and its ingredients are neither distinct nor amalgamated, all such theories are insubstantial....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 61 Sanskrit: स्यात्साद‍ृश्यभ्रमस्तावद्विकल्पे सति वस्तुन: ।जाग्रत्स्वापौ यथा स्वप्ने तथा विधिनिषेधता ॥ ६१ ॥ ITRANS: syāt sādṛśya-bhramas tāvadvikalpe sati vastunaḥjāgrat-svāpau yathā svapnetathā vidhi-niṣedhatā Translation: When a substance and its parts are separated, the acceptance of similarity between one and the other is called illusion. While dreaming, one creates a separation between the existences called wakefulness and sleep. It is in such a state of mind that the regulative principles of the scriptures, consisting of injunctions and prohibitions, are recommended....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 62 Sanskrit: भावाद्वैतं क्रियाद्वैतं द्रव्याद्वैतं तथात्मन: ।वर्तयन्स्वानुभूत्येह त्रीन्स्वप्नान्धुनुते मुनि: ॥ ६२ ॥ ITRANS: bhāvādvaitaṁ kriyādvaitaṁdravyādvaitaṁ tathātmanaḥvartayan svānubhūtyehatrīn svapnān dhunute muniḥ Translation: After considering the oneness of existence, activity and paraphernalia and after realizing the self to be different from all actions and reactions, the mental speculator [muni], according to his own realization, gives up the three states of wakefulness, dreaming and sleep....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 64 Sanskrit: यद् ब्रह्मणि परे साक्षात्सर्वकर्मसमर्पणम् ।मनोवाक्तनुभि: पार्थ क्रियाद्वैतं तदुच्यते ॥ ६४ ॥ ITRANS: yad brahmaṇi pare sākṣātsarva-karma-samarpaṇammano-vāk-tanubhiḥ pārthakriyādvaitaṁ tad ucyate Translation: My dear Yudhiṣṭhira [Pārtha], when all the activities one performs with his mind, words and body are dedicated directly to the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one reaches oneness of activities, called kriyādvaita. Purport: The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is teaching people how to come to the stage of dedicating everything to the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 65 Sanskrit: आत्मजायासुतादीनामन्येषां सर्वदेहिनाम् ।यत्स्वार्थकामयोरैक्यं द्रव्याद्वैतं तदुच्यते ॥ ६५ ॥ ITRANS: ātma-jāyā-sutādīnāmanyeṣāṁ sarva-dehināmyat svārtha-kāmayor aikyaṁdravyādvaitaṁ tad ucyate Translation: When the ultimate goal and interest of one’s self, one’s wife, one’s children, one’s relatives and all other embodied living beings is one, this is called dravyādvaita, or oneness of interest. Purport: The actual interest of all living entities — indeed, the goal of life — is to return home, back to Godhead....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 7 - Chapter 1 - Verse 66 Sanskrit: यद् यस्य वानिषिद्धं स्याद्येन यत्र यतो नृप ।स तेनेहेत कार्याणि नरो नान्यैरनापदि ॥ ६६ ॥ ITRANS: yad yasya vāniṣiddhaṁ syādyena yatra yato nṛpasa teneheta kāryāṇinaro nānyair anāpadi Translation: In normal conditions, in the absence of danger, O King Yudhiṣṭhira, a man should perform his prescribed activities according to his status of life with the things, endeavors, process and living place that are not forbidden for him, and not by any other means....
