Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 46 Sanskrit: स्वमेव ब्राह्मणो भुङ्क्ते स्वं वस्ते स्वं ददाति च ।तस्यैवानुग्रहेणान्नं भुञ्जते क्षत्रियादय: ॥ ४६ ॥ ITRANS: svam eva brāhmaṇo bhuṅktesvaṁ vaste svaṁ dadāti catasyaivānugraheṇānnaṁbhuñjate kṣatriyādayaḥ Translation: The kṣatriyas, vaiśyas and śūdras eat their food by virtue of the brāhmaṇas’ mercy. It is the brāhmaṇas who enjoy their own property, clothe themselves with their own property and give charity with their own property....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 47 Sanskrit: यैरीद‍ृशी भगवतो गतिरात्मवादएकान्ततो निगमिभि: प्रतिपादिता न: ।तुष्यन्‍त्वदभ्रकरुणा: स्वकृतेन नित्यंको नाम तत्प्रतिकरोति विनोदपात्रम् ॥ ४७ ॥ ITRANS: yair īdṛśī bhagavato gatir ātma-vādaekāntato nigamibhiḥ pratipāditā naḥtuṣyantv adabhra-karuṇāḥ sva-kṛtena nityaṁko nāma tat pratikaroti vinoda-pātram Translation: Pṛthu Mahārāja continued: How can such persons, who have rendered unlimited service by explaining the path of self-realization in relation to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and whose explanations are given for our enlightenment with complete conviction and Vedic evidence, be repaid except by folded palms containing water for their satisfaction?...

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 48 Sanskrit: मैत्रेय उवाचत आत्मयोगपतय आदिराजेन पूजिता: ।शीलं तदीयं शंसन्त: खेऽभवन्मिषतां नृणाम् ॥ ४८ ॥ ITRANS: maitreya uvācata ātma-yoga-patayaādi-rājena pūjitāḥśīlaṁ tadīyaṁ śaṁsantaḥkhe ’bhavan miṣatāṁ nṛṇām Translation: The great sage Maitreya continued: Being thus worshiped by Mahārāja Pṛthu, the four Kumāras, who were masters of devotional service, became very pleased. Indeed, they appeared in the sky and praised the character of the King, and everyone observed them....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 49 Sanskrit: वैन्यस्तु धुर्यो महतां संस्थित्याध्यात्मशिक्षया ।आप्तकाममिवात्मानं मेन आत्मन्यवस्थित: ॥ ४९ ॥ ITRANS: vainyas tu dhuryo mahatāṁsaṁsthityādhyātma-śikṣayāāpta-kāmam ivātmānaṁmena ātmany avasthitaḥ Translation: Amongst great personalities, Mahārāja Pṛthu was the chief by virtue of his fixed position in relation to spiritual enlightenment. He remained satisfied as one who has achieved all success in spiritual understanding. Purport: Remaining fixed in devotional service gives one the utmost in self-satisfaction....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 50 Sanskrit: कर्माणि च यथाकालं यथादेशं यथाबलम् ।यथोचितं यथावित्तमकरोद्ब्रह्मसात्कृतम् ॥ ५० ॥ ITRANS: karmāṇi ca yathā-kālaṁyathā-deśaṁ yathā-balamyathocitaṁ yathā-vittamakarod brahma-sāt-kṛtam Translation: Being self-satisfied, Mahārāja Pṛthu executed his duties as perfectly as possible according to the time and his situation, strength and financial position. His only aim in all his activities was to satisfy the Absolute Truth. In this way, he duly acted. Purport: Mahārāja Pṛthu was a responsible monarch, and he had to execute the duties of a kṣatriya, a king and a devotee at the same time....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 51 Sanskrit: फलं ब्रह्मणि संन्यस्य निर्विषङ्ग: समाहित: ।कर्माध्यक्षं च मन्वान आत्मानं प्रकृते: परम् ॥ ५१ ॥ ITRANS: phalaṁ brahmaṇi sannyasyanirviṣaṅgaḥ samāhitaḥkarmādhyakṣaṁ ca manvānaātmānaṁ prakṛteḥ param Translation: Mahārāja Pṛthu completely dedicated himself to be an eternal servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, transcendental to material nature. Consequently all the fruits of his activities were dedicated to the Lord, and he always thought of himself as the servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the proprietor of everything....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 52 Sanskrit: गृहेषु वर्तमानोऽपि स साम्राज्यश्रियान्वित: ।नासज्जतेन्द्रियार्थेषु निरहंमतिरर्कवत् ॥ ५२ ॥ ITRANS: gṛheṣu vartamāno ’pisa sāmrājya-śriyānvitaḥnāsajjatendriyārtheṣuniraham-matir arkavat Translation: Mahārāja Pṛthu, who was very opulent due to the prosperity of his entire empire, remained at home as a householder. Since he was never inclined to utilize his opulences for the gratification of his senses, he remained unattached, exactly like the sun, which is unaffected in all circumstances....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 53 Sanskrit: एवमध्यात्मयोगेन कर्माण्यनुसमाचरन् ।पुत्रानुत्पादयामास पञ्चार्चिष्यात्मसम्मतान् ॥ ५३ ॥ ITRANS: evam adhyātma-yogenakarmāṇy anusamācaranputrān utpādayām āsapañcārciṣy ātma-sammatān Translation: Being situated in the liberated position of devotional service, Pṛthu Mahārāja not only performed all fruitive activities but also begot five sons by his wife, Arci. Indeed, all his sons were begotten according to his own desire. Purport: As a householder, Pṛthu Mahārāja had five sons by his wife, Arci, and all these sons were begotten as he desired them....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 54 Sanskrit: विजिताश्वं धूम्रकेशं हर्यक्षं द्रविणंवृकम् ।सर्वेषां लोकपालानां दधारैक: पृथुर्गुणान् ॥ ५४ ॥ ITRANS: vijitāśvaṁ dhūmrakeśaṁharyakṣaṁ draviṇaṁ vṛkamsarveṣāṁ loka-pālānāṁdadhāraikaḥ pṛthur guṇān Translation: After begetting five sons, named Vijitāśva, Dhūmrakeśa, Haryakṣa, Draviṇa and Vṛka, Pṛthu Mahārāja continued to rule the planet. He accepted all the qualities of the deities who governed all other planets. Purport: In each and every planet there is a predominating deity....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 55 Sanskrit: गोपीथाय जगत्सृष्टे: काले स्वेस्वेऽच्युतात्मक: ।मनोवाग्वृत्तिभि: सौम्यैर्गुणै: संरञ्जयन्प्रजा: ॥ ५५ ॥ ITRANS: gopīthāya jagat-sṛṣṭeḥkāle sve sve ’cyutātmakaḥmano-vāg-vṛttibhiḥ saumyairguṇaiḥ saṁrañjayan prajāḥ Translation: Since Mahārāja Pṛthu was a perfect devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he wanted to protect the Lord’s creation by pleasing the various citizens according to their various desires. Therefore Pṛthu Mahārāja used to please them in all respects by his words, mentality, works and gentle behavior....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 56 Sanskrit: राजेत्यधान्नामधेयं सोमराज इवापर: ।सूर्यवद्विसृजन् गृह्णन् प्रतपंश्च भुवो वसु ॥ ५६ ॥ ITRANS: rājety adhān nāmadheyaṁsoma-rāja ivāparaḥsūryavad visṛjan gṛhṇanpratapaṁś ca bhuvo vasu Translation: Mahārāja Pṛthu became as celebrated a king as Soma-rāja, the king of the moon. He was also powerful and exacting, just like the sun-god, who distributes heat and light and at the same time exacts all the planetary waters....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 57 Sanskrit: दुर्धर्षस्तेजसेवाग्निर्महेन्द्र इव दुर्जय: ।तितिक्षया धरित्रीव द्यौरिवाभीष्टदो नृणाम् ॥ ५७ ॥ ITRANS: durdharṣas tejasevāgnirmahendra iva durjayaḥtitikṣayā dharitrīvadyaur ivābhīṣṭa-do nṛṇām Translation: Mahārāja Pṛthu was so strong and powerful that no one could disobey his orders, any more than one could conquer fire itself. He was so strong that he was compared to Indra, the King of heaven, whose power is insuperable. On the other hand, Mahārāja Pṛthu was also as tolerant as the earth, and in fulfilling various desires of human society, he was like heaven itself....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 58 Sanskrit: वर्षति स्म यथाकामं पर्जन्य इव तर्पयन् ।समुद्र इव दुर्बोध: सत्त्वेनाचलराडिव ॥ ५८ ॥ ITRANS: varṣati sma yathā-kāmaṁparjanya iva tarpayansamudra iva durbodhaḥsattvenācala-rāḍ iva Translation: Just as rainfall satisfies everyone’s desires, Mahārāja Pṛthu used to satisfy everyone. He was like the sea in that no one could understand his depths, and he was like Meru, the king of hills, in the fixity of his purpose....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 59 Sanskrit: धर्मराडिव शिक्षायामाश्चर्ये हिमवानिव ।कुवेर इव कोशाढ्यो गुप्तार्थो वरुणो यथा ॥ ५९ ॥ ITRANS: dharma-rāḍ iva śikṣāyāmāścarye himavān ivakuvera iva kośāḍhyoguptārtho varuṇo yathā Translation: Mahārāja Pṛthu’s intelligence and education were exactly like that of Yamarāja, the superintendent of death. His opulence was comparable to the Himālaya Mountains, where all valuable jewels and metals are stocked. He possessed great riches like Kuvera, the treasurer of the heavenly planets, and no one could reveal his secrets, for they were like the demigod Varuṇa’s....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 4 - Chapter 1 - Verse 60 Sanskrit: मातरिश्वेव सर्वात्मा बलेन महसौजसा ।अविषह्यतया देवो भगवान् भूतराडिव ॥ ६० ॥ ITRANS: mātariśveva sarvātmābalena mahasaujasāaviṣahyatayā devobhagavān bhūta-rāḍ iva Translation: In his bodily strength and in the strength of his senses, Mahārāja Pṛthu was as strong as the wind, which can go anywhere and everywhere. As far as his intolerance was concerned, he was just like the all-powerful Rudra expansion of Lord Śiva, or Sadāśiva....
