As confirmed in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa: “That sage Sumantu, whose brilliance was immeasurable, taught the Atharva Veda to his disciple Kabandha. Kabandha in turn divided it into two parts and passed them down to Vedadarśa and Pathya.”
