Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 36 Sanskrit: श्रीशौनक उवाचपैलादिभिर्व्यासशिष्यैर्वेदाचार्यैर्महात्मभि: ।वेदाश्च कथिता व्यस्ता एतत् सौम्याभिधेहि न: ॥ ३६ ॥ ITRANS: śrī-śaunaka uvācapailādibhir vyāsa-śiṣyairvedācāryair mahātmabhiḥvedāś ca kathitā vyastāetat saumyābhidhehi naḥ Translation: Śaunaka Ṛṣi said: O gentle Sūta, please narrate to us how Paila and the other greatly intelligent disciples of Śrīla Vyāsadeva, who are known as the standard authorities of Vedic wisdom, spoke and edited the Vedas. Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 37 Sanskrit: सूत उवाचसमाहितात्मनो ब्रह्मन् ब्रह्मण: परमेष्ठिन: ।हृद्याकाशादभून्नादो वृत्तिरोधाद् विभाव्यते ॥ ३७ ॥ ITRANS: sūta uvācasamāhitātmano brahmanbrahmaṇaḥ parameṣṭhinaḥhṛdy ākāśād abhūn nādovṛtti-rodhād vibhāvyate Translation: Sūta Gosvāmī said: O brāhmaṇa, first the subtle vibration of transcendental sound appeared from the sky of the heart of the most elevated Lord Brahmā, whose mind was perfectly fixed in spiritual realization. One can perceive this subtle vibration when one stops all external hearing....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 38 Sanskrit: यदुपासनया ब्रह्मन् योगिनो मलमात्मन: ।द्रव्यक्रियाकारकाख्यं धूत्वा यान्त्यपुनर्भवम् ॥ ३८ ॥ ITRANS: yad-upāsanayā brahmanyogino malam ātmanaḥdravya-kriyā-kārakākhyaṁdhūtvā yānty apunar-bhavam Translation: By worship of this subtle form of the Vedas, O brāhmaṇa, mystic sages cleanse their hearts of all contamination caused by impurity of substance, activity and doer, and thus they attain freedom from repeated birth and death. Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 39 Sanskrit: ततोऽभूत्‍त्रिवृदोंकारो योऽव्यक्तप्रभव: स्वराट् ।यत्तल्ल‍िङ्गं भगवतो ब्रह्मण: परमात्मन: ॥ ३९ ॥ ITRANS: tato ’bhūt tri-vṛd oṁkāroyo ’vyakta-prabhavaḥ sva-rāṭyat tal liṅgaṁ bhagavatobrahmaṇaḥ paramātmanaḥ Translation: From that transcendental subtle vibration arose the oṁkāra composed of three sounds. The oṁkāra has unseen potencies and manifests automatically within a purified heart. It is the representation of the Absolute Truth in all three of His phases — the Supreme Personality, the Supreme Soul and the supreme impersonal truth....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 40-41 Sanskrit: श‍ृणोति य इमं स्फोटं सुप्तश्रोत्रे च शून्यद‍ृक् ।येन वाग् व्यज्यते यस्य व्यक्तिराकाश आत्मन: ॥ ४० ॥स्वधाम्नो ब्राह्मण: साक्षाद् वाचक: परमात्मन: ।स सर्वमन्त्रोपनिषद्वेदबीजं सनातनम् ॥ ४१ ॥ ITRANS: śṛṇoti ya imaṁ sphoṭaṁsupta-śrotre ca śūnya-dṛkyena vāg vyajyate yasyavyaktir ākāśa ātmanaḥ Translation: This oṁkāra, ultimately nonmaterial and imperceptible, is heard by the Supersoul without His possessing material ears or any other material senses. The entire expanse of Vedic sound is elaborated from oṁkāra, which appears from the soul, within the sky of the heart....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 42 Sanskrit: तस्य ह्यासंस्त्रयो वर्णा अकाराद्या भृगूद्वह ।धार्यन्ते यैस्त्रयो भावा गुणनामार्थवृत्तय: ॥ ४२ ॥ ITRANS: tasya hy āsaṁs trayo varṇāa-kārādyā bhṛgūdvahadhāryante yais trayo bhāvāguṇa-nāmārtha-vṛttayaḥ Translation: Oṁkāra exhibited the three original sounds of the alphabet — A, U and M. These three, O most eminent descendant of Bhṛgu, sustain all the different threefold aspects of material existence, including the three modes of nature, the names of the Ṛg, Yajur and Sāma Vedas, the goals known as the Bhūr, Bhuvar and Svar planetary systems, and the three functional platforms called waking consciousness, sleep and deep sleep....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 43 Sanskrit: ततोऽक्षरसमाम्नायमसृजद् भगवानज: ।अन्तस्थोष्मस्वरस्पर्शह्रस्वदीर्घादिलक्षणम् ॥ ४३ ॥ ITRANS: tato ’kṣara-samāmnāyamasṛjad bhagavān ajaḥantasthoṣma-svara-sparśa-hrasva-dīrghādi-lakṣaṇam Translation: From that oṁkāra Lord Brahmā created all the sounds of the alphabet — the vowels, consonants, semivowels, sibilants and others — distinguished by such features as long and short measure. Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 44 Sanskrit: तेनासौ चतुरो वेदांश्चतुर्भिर्वदनैर्विभु: ।सव्याहृतिकान् सोंकारांश्चातुर्होत्रविवक्षया ॥ ४४ ॥ ITRANS: tenāsau caturo vedāṁścaturbhir vadanair vibhuḥsa-vyāhṛtikān soṁkārāṁścātur-hotra-vivakṣayā Translation: All-powerful Brahmā made use of this collection of sounds to produce from his four faces the four Vedas, which appeared together with the sacred oṁkāra and the seven vyāhṛti invocations. His intention was to propagate the process of Vedic sacrifice according to the different functions performed by the priests of each of the four Vedas....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 45 Sanskrit: पुत्रानध्यापयत्तांस्तु ब्रह्मर्षीन् ब्रह्मकोविदान् ।ते तु धर्मोपदेष्टार: स्वपुत्रेभ्य: समादिशन् ॥ ४५ ॥ ITRANS: putrān adhyāpayat tāṁs tubrahmarṣīn brahma-kovidānte tu dharmopadeṣṭāraḥsva-putrebhyaḥ samādiśan Translation: Brahmā taught these Vedas to his sons, who were great sages among the brāhmaṇas and experts in the art of Vedic recitation. They in turn took the role of ācāryas and imparted the Vedas to their own sons. Purport:

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 46 Sanskrit: ते परम्परया प्राप्तास्तत्तच्छिष्यैर्धृतव्रतै: ।चतुर्युगेष्वथ व्यस्ता द्वापरादौ महर्षिभि: ॥ ४६ ॥ ITRANS: te paramparayā prāptāstat-tac-chiṣyair dhṛta-vrataiḥcatur-yugeṣv atha vyastādvāparādau maharṣibhiḥ Translation: In this way, throughout the cycles of four ages, generation after generation of disciples — all firmly fixed in their spiritual vows — have received these Vedas by disciplic succession. At the end of each Dvāpara-yuga the Vedas are edited into separate divisions by eminent sages....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 47 Sanskrit: क्षीणायुष: क्षीणसत्त्वान् दुर्मेधान् वीक्ष्य कालत: ।वेदान्ब्रह्मर्षयो व्यस्यन् हृदिस्थाच्युतचोदिता: ॥ ४७ ॥ ITRANS: kṣīṇāyuṣaḥ kṣīṇa-sattvāndurmedhān vīkṣya kālataḥvedān brahmarṣayo vyasyanhṛdi-sthācyuta-coditāḥ Translation: Observing that people in general were diminished in their life span, strength and intelligence by the influence of time, great sages took inspiration from the Personality of Godhead sitting within their hearts and systematically divided the Vedas. Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 12 - Chapter 1 - Verse 48-49 Sanskrit: अस्मिन्नप्यन्तरे ब्रह्मन् भगवान्लोकभावन: ।ब्रह्मेशाद्यैर्लोकपालैर्याचितो धर्मगुप्तये ॥ ४८ ॥पराशरात् सत्यवत्यामंशांशकलया विभु: ।अवतीर्णो महाभाग वेदं चक्रे चतुर्विधम् ॥ ४९ ॥ ITRANS: asminn apy antare brahmanbhagavān loka-bhāvanaḥbrahmeśādyair loka-pālairyācito dharma-guptaye Translation: O brāhmaṇa, in the present age of Vaivasvata Manu, the leaders of the universe, led by Brahmā and Śiva, requested the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the protector of all the worlds, to save the principles of religion....
