Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 18-19 Sanskrit: स्तेयं हिंसानृतं दम्भ: काम: क्रोध: स्मयो मद: ।भेदो वैरमविश्वास: संस्पर्धा व्यसनानि च ॥ १८ ॥एते पञ्चदशानर्था ह्यर्थमूला मता नृणाम् ।तस्मादनर्थमर्थाख्यं श्रेयोऽर्थी दूरतस्त्यजेत् ॥ १९ ॥ ITRANS: steyaṁ hiṁsānṛtaṁ dambhaḥkāmaḥ krodhaḥ smayo madaḥbhedo vairam aviśvāsaḥsaṁspardhā vyasanāni ca Translation: Theft, violence, speaking lies, duplicity, lust, anger, perplexity, pride, quarreling, enmity, faithlessness, envy and the dangers caused by women, gambling and intoxication are the fifteen undesirable qualities that contaminate men because of greed for wealth....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 21 Sanskrit: अर्थेनाल्पीयसा ह्येते संरब्धा दीप्तमन्यव: ।त्यजन्त्याशु स्पृधो घ्नन्ति सहसोत्सृज्य सौहृदम् ॥ २१ ॥ ITRANS: arthenālpīyasā hy etesaṁrabdhā dīpta-manyavaḥtyajanty āśu spṛdho ghnantisahasotsṛjya sauhṛdam Translation: For even a small amount of money these relatives and friends become very agitated and their anger is inflamed. Acting as rivals, they quickly give up all sentiments of goodwill and will reject one at a moment’s notice, even to the point of committing murder....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 22 Sanskrit: लब्ध्वा जन्मामरप्रार्थ्यं मानुष्यं तद्द्विजाग्र्‍यताम् ।तदनाद‍ृत्य ये स्वार्थं घ्नन्ति यान्त्यशुभां गतिम् ॥ २२ ॥ ITRANS: labdhvā janmāmara-prārthyaṁmānuṣyaṁ tad dvijāgryatāmtad anādṛtya ye svārthaṁghnanti yānty aśubhāṁ gatim Translation: Those who obtain human life, which is prayed for even by the demigods, and in that human birth become situated as first-class brāhmaṇas, are extremely fortunate. If they disregard this important opportunity, they are certainly killing their own self-interest and thus achieve a most unfortunate end....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 23 Sanskrit: स्वर्गापवर्गयोर्द्वारं प्राप्य लोकमिमं पुमान् ।द्रविणे कोऽनुषज्जेत मर्त्योऽनर्थस्य धामनि ॥ २३ ॥ ITRANS: svargāpavargayor dvāraṁprāpya lokam imaṁ pumāndraviṇe ko ’nuṣajjetamartyo ’narthasya dhāmani Translation: What mortal man, having achieved this human life, which is the very gateway to both heaven and liberation, would willingly become attached to that abode of worthlessness, material property? Purport: That which one intends to use for one’s personal sense gratification is called material property, whereas paraphernalia to be used in the Lord’s loving service is understood to be spiritual....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 24 Sanskrit: देवर्षिपितृभूतानि ज्ञातीन् बन्धूंश्च भागिन: ।असंविभज्य चात्मानं यक्षवित्त: पतत्यध: ॥ २४ ॥ ITRANS: devarṣi-pitṛ-bhūtānijñātīn bandhūṁś ca bhāginaḥasaṁvibhajya cātmānaṁyakṣa-vittaḥ pataty adhaḥ Translation: One who fails to distribute his wealth to the proper shareholders — the demigods, sages, forefathers and ordinary living entities, as well as his immediate relatives, in-laws and own self — is maintaining his wealth simply like a Yakṣa and will fall down....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 25 Sanskrit: व्यर्थयार्थेहया वित्तं प्रमत्तस्य वयो बलम् ।कुशला येन सिध्यन्ति जरठ: किं नु साधये ॥ २५ ॥ ITRANS: vyarthayārthehayā vittaṁpramattasya vayo balamkuśalā yena sidhyantijaraṭhaḥ kiṁ nu sādhaye Translation: Discriminating persons are able to utilize their money, youth and strength to achieve perfection. But I have feverishly squandered these in the useless endeavor for further wealth. Now that I am an old man, what can I achieve?...

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 26 Sanskrit: कस्मात् सङ्‍‍क्लिश्यते विद्वान् व्यर्थयार्थेहयासकृत् ।कस्यचिन्मायया नूनं लोकोऽयं सुविमोहित: ॥ २६ ॥ ITRANS: kasmāt saṅkliśyate vidvānvyarthayārthehayāsakṛtkasyacin māyayā nūnaṁloko ’yaṁ su-vimohitaḥ Translation: Why must an intelligent man suffer by his constant vain efforts to get wealth? Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 27 Sanskrit: किं धनैर्धनदैर्वा किं कामैर्वा कामदैरुत ।मृत्युना ग्रस्यमानस्य कर्मभिर्वोत जन्मदै: ॥ २७ ॥ ITRANS: kiṁ dhanair dhana-dair vā kiṁkāmair vā kāma-dair utamṛtyunā grasyamānasyakarmabhir vota janma-daiḥ Translation: For one who is in the grips of death, what is the use of wealth or those who offer it, sense gratification or those who offer it, or, for that matter, any type of fruitive activity, which simply causes one to again take birth in the material world?...

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 28 Sanskrit: नूनं मे भगवांस्तुष्ट: सर्वदेवमयो हरि: ।येन नीतो दशामेतां निर्वेदश्चात्मन: प्लव: ॥ २८ ॥ ITRANS: nūnaṁ me bhagavāṁs tuṣṭaḥsarva-deva-mayo hariḥyena nīto daśām etāṁnirvedaś cātmanaḥ plavaḥ Translation: The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Hari, who contains within Himself all the demigods, must be satisfied with me. Indeed, He has brought me to this suffering condition and forced me to experience detachment, which is the boat to carry me over this ocean of material life....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 29 Sanskrit: सोऽहं कालावशेषेण शोषयिष्येऽङ्गमात्मन: ।अप्रमत्तोऽखिलस्वार्थे यदि स्यात् सिद्ध आत्मनि ॥ २९ ॥ ITRANS: so ’haṁ kālāvaśeṣeṇaśoṣayiṣye ’ṅgam ātmanaḥapramatto ’khila-svārtheyadi syāt siddha ātmani Translation: If there is any time remaining in my life, I will perform austerities and force my body to subsist on the bare necessities. Without further confusion I shall pursue that which constitutes my entire self-interest in life, and I shall remain satisfied within the self....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 30 Sanskrit: तत्र मामनुमोदेरन् देवात्रिभुवनेश्वरा: ।मुहूर्तेन ब्रह्मलोकं खट्‍वाङ्ग: समसाधयत् ॥ ३० ॥ ITRANS: tatra mām anumoderandevās tri-bhuvaneśvarāḥmuhūrtena brahma-lokaṁkhaṭvāṅgaḥ samasādhayat Translation: Thus may the presiding demigods of these three worlds kindly show their mercy upon me. Indeed, Mahārāja Khaṭvāṅga was able to achieve the spiritual world in a single moment. Purport: The brāhmaṇa of Avantī thought that although he was an old man who might die at any moment he could follow the example of Mahārāja Khaṭvāṅga, who achieved the Lord’s mercy in a single moment....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 11 - Chapter 1 - Verse 31 Sanskrit: श्रीभगवानुवाचइत्यभिप्रेत्य मनसा ह्यावन्त्यो द्विजसत्तम: ।उन्मुच्य हृदयग्रन्थीन् शान्तो भिक्षुरभून्मुनि: ॥ ३१ ॥ ITRANS: śrī-bhagavān uvācaity abhipretya manasāhy āvantyo dvija-sattamaḥunmucya hṛdaya-granthīnśānto bhikṣur abhūn muniḥ Translation: Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa continued: His mind thus determined, that most excellent Avantī brāhmaṇa was able to untie the knots of desire within his heart.
