Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 1 Sanskrit: सूत उवाचएवं निशम्य भगवान्देवर्षेर्जन्म कर्म च ।भूय: पप्रच्छ तं ब्रह्मन् व्यास: सत्यवतीसुत: ॥ १ ॥ ITRANS: sūta uvācaevaṁ niśamya bhagavāndevarṣer janma karma cabhūyaḥ papraccha taṁ brahmanvyāsaḥ satyavatī-sutaḥ Translation: Sūta said: O brāhmaṇas, thus hearing all about Śrī Nārada’s birth and activities, Vyāsadeva, the incarnation of God and son of Satyavatī, inquired as follows. Purport: Vyāsadeva was further inquisitive to know about the perfection of Nāradajī, and therefore he wanted to know about him more and more....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 2 Sanskrit: व्यास उवाचभिक्षुभिर्विप्रवसिते विज्ञानादेष्टृभिस्तव ।वर्तमानो वयस्याद्ये तत: किमकरोद्भ‍वान् ॥ २ ॥ ITRANS: vyāsa uvācabhikṣubhir vipravasitevijñānādeṣṭṛbhis tavavartamāno vayasy ādyetataḥ kim akarod bhavān Translation: Śrī Vyāsadeva said: What did you [Nārada] do after the departure of the great sages who had instructed you in scientific transcendental knowledge before the beginning of your present birth? Purport: Vyāsadeva himself was the disciple of Nāradajī, and therefore it was natural to be anxious to hear what Nārada did after initiation from the spiritual masters....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 3 Sanskrit: स्वायम्भुव कया वृत्त्या वर्तितं ते परं वय: ।कथं चेदमुदस्राक्षी: काले प्राप्ते कलेवरम् ॥ ३ ॥ ITRANS: svāyambhuva kayā vṛttyāvartitaṁ te paraṁ vayaḥkathaṁ cedam udasrākṣīḥkāle prāpte kalevaram Translation: O son of Brahmā, how did you pass your life after initiation, and how did you attain this body, having quit your old one in due course? Purport: Śrī Nārada Muni in his previous life was just an ordinary maidservant’s son, so how he became so perfectly transformed into the spiritual body of eternal life, bliss and knowledge is certainly important....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 4 Sanskrit: प्राक्कल्पविषयामेतां स्मृतिं ते मुनिसत्तम ।न ह्येष व्यवधात्काल एष सर्वनिराकृति: ॥ ४ ॥ ITRANS: prāk-kalpa-viṣayām etāṁsmṛtiṁ te muni-sattamana hy eṣa vyavadhāt kālaeṣa sarva-nirākṛtiḥ Translation: O great sage, time annihilates everything in due course, so how is it that this subject matter, which happened prior to this day of Brahmā, is still fresh in your memory, undisturbed by time? Purport: As spirit is not annihilated even after the annihilation of the material body, so also spiritual consciousness is not annihilated....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 5 Sanskrit: नारद उवाचभिक्षुभिर्विप्रवसिते विज्ञानादेष्टृभिर्मम ।वर्तमानो वयस्याद्ये तत एतदकारषम् ॥ ५ ॥ ITRANS: nārada uvācabhikṣubhir vipravasitevijñānādeṣṭṛbhir mamavartamāno vayasy ādyetata etad akāraṣam Translation: Śrī Nārada said: The great sages, who had imparted scientific knowledge of transcendence to me, departed for other places, and I had to pass my life in this way. Purport: In his previous life, when Nāradajī was impregnated with spiritual knowledge by the grace of the great sages, there was a tangible change in his life, although he was only a boy of five years....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 6 Sanskrit: एकात्मजा मे जननी योषिन्मूढा च किङ्करी ।मय्यात्मजेऽनन्यगतौ चक्रे स्‍नेहानुबन्धनम् ॥ ६ ॥ ITRANS: ekātmajā me jananīyoṣin mūḍhā ca kiṅkarīmayy ātmaje ’nanya-gataucakre snehānubandhanam Translation: I was the only son of my mother, who was not only a simple woman but a maidservant as well. Since I was her only offspring, she had no other alternative for protection: she bound me with the tie of affection....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 7 Sanskrit: सास्वतन्त्रा न कल्पासीद्योगक्षेमं ममेच्छती ।ईशस्य हि वशे लोको योषा दारुमयी यथा ॥ ७ ॥ ITRANS: sāsvatantrā na kalpāsīdyoga-kṣemaṁ mamecchatīīśasya hi vaśe lokoyoṣā dārumayī yathā Translation: She wanted to look after my maintenance properly, but because she was not independent, she was not able to do anything for me. The world is under the full control of the Supreme Lord; therefore everyone is like a wooden doll in the hands of a puppet master....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 8 Sanskrit: अहं च तद्ब्रह्मकुले ऊषिवांस्तदुपेक्षया ।दिग्देशकालाव्युत्पन्नो बालक: पञ्चहायन: ॥ ८ ॥ ITRANS: ahaṁ ca tad-brahma-kuleūṣivāṁs tad-upekṣayādig-deśa-kālāvyutpannobālakaḥ pañca-hāyanaḥ Translation: When I was a mere child of five years, I lived in a brāhmaṇa school. I was dependent on my mother’s affection and had no experience of different lands. Purport:

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 9 Sanskrit: एकदा निर्गतां गेहाद्दुहन्तीं निशि गां पथि ।सर्पोऽदशत्पदा स्पृष्ट: कृपणां कालचोदित: ॥ ९ ॥ ITRANS: ekadā nirgatāṁ gehādduhantīṁ niśi gāṁ pathisarpo ’daśat padā spṛṣṭaḥkṛpaṇāṁ kāla-coditaḥ Translation: Once upon a time, my poor mother, when going out one night to milk a cow, was bitten on the leg by a serpent, influenced by supreme time. Purport: That is the way of dragging a sincere soul nearer to God....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 10 Sanskrit: तदा तदहमीशस्य भक्तानां शमभीप्सत: ।अनुग्रहं मन्यमान: प्रातिष्ठं दिशमुत्तराम् ॥ १० ॥ ITRANS: tadā tad aham īśasyabhaktānāṁ śam abhīpsataḥanugrahaṁ manyamānaḥprātiṣṭhaṁ diśam uttarām Translation: I took this as the special mercy of the Lord, who always desires benediction for His devotees, and so thinking, I started for the north. Purport: Confidential devotees of the Lord see in every step a benedictory direction of the Lord....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 11 Sanskrit: स्फीताञ्जनपदांस्तत्र पुरग्रामव्रजाकरान् ।खेटखर्वटवाटीश्च वनान्युपवनानि च ॥ ११ ॥ ITRANS: sphītāñ janapadāṁs tatrapura-grāma-vrajākarānkheṭa-kharvaṭa-vāṭīś cavanāny upavanāni ca Translation: After my departure, I passed through many flourishing metropolises, towns, villages, animal farms, mines, agricultural lands, valleys, flower gardens, nursery gardens and natural forests. Purport: Man’s activities in agriculture, mining, farming, industries, gardening, etc., were all on the same scale as they are now, even previous to the present creation, and the same activities will remain as they are, even in the next creation....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 12 Sanskrit: चित्रधातुविचित्राद्रीनिभभग्नभुजद्रुमान् ।जलाशयाञ्छिवजलान्नलिनी: सुरसेविता: ।चित्रस्वनै: पत्ररथैर्विभ्रमद्भ्रमरश्रिय: ॥ १२ ॥ ITRANS: citra-dhātu-vicitrādrīnibha-bhagna-bhuja-drumānjalāśayāñ chiva-jalānnalinīḥ sura-sevitāḥcitra-svanaiḥ patra-rathairvibhramad bhramara-śriyaḥ Translation: I passed through hills and mountains full of reservoirs of various minerals like gold, silver and copper, and through tracts of land with reservoirs of water filled with beautiful lotus flowers, fit for the denizens of heaven, decorated with bewildered bees and singing birds. Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 13 Sanskrit: नलवेणुशरस्तन्बकुशकीचकगह्वरम् ।एक एवातियातोऽहमद्राक्षं विपिनं महत् ।घोरं प्रतिभयाकारं व्यालोलूकशिवाजिरम् ॥ १३ ॥ ITRANS: nala-veṇu-śaras-tanba-kuśa-kīcaka-gahvarameka evātiyāto ’hamadrākṣaṁ vipinaṁ mahatghoraṁ pratibhayākāraṁvyālolūka-śivājiram Translation: I then passed alone through many forests of rushes, bamboo, reeds, sharp grass, weeds and caves, which were very difficult to go through alone. I visited deep, dark and dangerously fearful forests, which were the play yards of snakes, owls and jackals....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 14 Sanskrit: परिश्रान्तेन्द्रियात्माहं तृट्परीतो बुभुक्षित: ।स्‍नात्वा पीत्वा ह्रदे नद्या उपस्पृष्टो गतश्रम: ॥ १४ ॥ ITRANS: pariśrāntendriyātmāhaṁtṛṭ-parīto bubhukṣitaḥsnātvā pītvā hrade nadyāupaspṛṣṭo gata-śramaḥ Translation: Thus traveling, I felt tired, both bodily and mentally, and I was both thirsty and hungry. So I took a bath in a river lake and also drank water. By contacting water, I got relief from my exhaustion. Purport: A traveling mendicant can meet the needs of the body, namely thirst and hunger, by the gifts of nature without being a beggar at the doors of the householders....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 15 Sanskrit: तस्मिन्निर्मनुजेऽरण्ये पिप्पलोपस्थ आश्रित: ।आत्मनात्मानमात्मस्थं यथाश्रुतमचिन्तयम् ॥ १५ ॥ ITRANS: tasmin nirmanuje ’raṇyepippalopastha āśritaḥātmanātmānam ātmasthaṁyathā-śrutam acintayam Translation: After that, under the shadow of a banyan tree in an uninhabited forest I began to meditate upon the Supersoul situated within, using my intelligence, as I had learned from liberated souls. Purport: One should not meditate according to one’s personal whims. One should know perfectly well from the authoritative sources of scriptures through the transparent medium of a bona fide spiritual master and by proper use of one’s trained intelligence for meditating upon the Supersoul dwelling within every living being....
