Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 16 Sanskrit: दैवेनाप्रतिघातेन शुक्ले संस्थामुपेयुषि ।रातो वोऽनुग्रहार्थाय विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना ॥ १६ ॥ ITRANS: daivenāpratighātenaśukle saṁsthām upeyuṣirāto vo ’nugrahārthāyaviṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā Translation: The brāhmaṇas said: This spotless son has been restored by the all-powerful and all-pervasive Lord Viṣṇu, the Personality of Godhead, in order to oblige you. He was saved when he was doomed to be destroyed by an irresistible supernatural weapon. Purport: The child Parīkṣit was saved by the all-powerful and all-pervasive Viṣṇu (Lord Kṛṣṇa) for two reasons....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 17 Sanskrit: तस्मान्नाम्ना विष्णुरात इति लोके भविष्यति ।न सन्देहो महाभाग महाभागवतो महान् ॥ १७ ॥ ITRANS: tasmān nāmnā viṣṇu-rātaiti loke bhaviṣyatina sandeho mahā-bhāgamahā-bhāgavato mahān Translation: For this reason this child will be well known in the world as one who is protected by the Personality of Godhead. O most fortunate one, there is no doubt that this child will become a first-class devotee and will be qualified with all good qualities....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 18 Sanskrit: श्रीराजोवाचअप्येष वंश्यान् राजर्षीन् पुण्यश्लोकान् महात्मन: ।अनुवर्तिता स्विद्यशसा साधुवादेन सत्तमा: ॥ १८ ॥ ITRANS: śrī-rājovācaapy eṣa vaṁśyān rājarṣīnpuṇya-ślokān mahātmanaḥanuvartitā svid yaśasāsādhu-vādena sattamāḥ Translation: The good King [Yudhiṣṭhira] inquired: O great souls, will he become as saintly a king, as pious in his very name and as famous and glorified in his achievements, as others who appeared in this great royal family?...

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 19 Sanskrit: ब्राह्मणा ऊचु:पार्थ प्रजाविता साक्षादिक्ष्वाकुरिव मानव: ।ब्रह्मण्य: सत्यसन्धश्च रामो दाशरथिर्यथा ॥ १९ ॥ ITRANS: brāhmaṇā ūcuḥpārtha prajāvitā sākṣādikṣvākur iva mānavaḥbrahmaṇyaḥ satya-sandhaś carāmo dāśarathir yathā Translation: The learned brāhmaṇas said: O son of Pṛthā, this child shall be exactly like King Ikṣvāku, son of Manu, in maintaining all those who are born. And as for following the brahminical principles, especially in being true to his promise, he shall be exactly like Rāma, the Personality of Godhead, the son of Mahārāja Daśaratha....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 20 Sanskrit: एष दाता शरण्यश्च यथा ह्यौशीनर: शिबि: ।यशो वितनिता स्वानां दौष्यन्तिरिव यज्वनाम् ॥ २० ॥ ITRANS: eṣa dātā śaraṇyaś cayathā hy auśīnaraḥ śibiḥyaśo vitanitā svānāṁdauṣyantir iva yajvanām Translation: This child will be a munificent donor of charity and protector of the surrendered, like the famous King Śibi of the Uśīnara country. And he will expand the name and fame of his family like Bharata, the son of Mahārāja Duṣyanta....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 21 Sanskrit: धन्विनामग्रणीरेष तुल्यश्चार्जुनयोर्द्वयो: ।हुताश इव दुर्धर्ष: समुद्र इव दुस्तर: ॥ २१ ॥ ITRANS: dhanvinām agraṇīr eṣatulyaś cārjunayor dvayoḥhutāśa iva durdharṣaḥsamudra iva dustaraḥ Translation: Amongst great bowmen, this child will be as good as Arjuna. He will be as irresistible as fire and as unsurpassable as the ocean. Purport: In history there are two Arjunas. One is Kārtavīrya Arjuna, the King of Haihaya, and the other is the grandfather of the child....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 22 Sanskrit: मृगेन्द्र इव विक्रान्तो निषेव्यो हिमवानिव ।तितिक्षुर्वसुधेवासौ सहिष्णु: पितराविव ॥ २२ ॥ ITRANS: mṛgendra iva vikrāntoniṣevyo himavān ivatitikṣur vasudhevāsausahiṣṇuḥ pitarāv iva Translation: This child will be as strong as a lion, and as worthy a shelter as the Himālaya Mountains. He will be forbearing like the earth, and as tolerant as his parents. Purport: One is compared to the lion when one is very strong in chasing an enemy....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 23 Sanskrit: पितामहसम: साम्ये प्रसादे गिरिशोपम: ।आश्रय: सर्वभूतानां यथा देवो रमाश्रय: ॥ २३ ॥ ITRANS: pitāmaha-samaḥ sāmyeprasāde giriśopamaḥāśrayaḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁyathā devo ramāśrayaḥ Translation: This child will be like his grandfather Yudhiṣṭhira or Brahmā in equanimity of mind. He will be munificent like the lord of the Kailāsa Hill, Śiva. And he will be the resort of everyone, like the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Nārāyaṇa, who is even the shelter of the goddess of fortune....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 24 Sanskrit: सर्वसद्गुणमाहात्म्ये एष कृष्णमनुव्रत: ।रन्तिदेव इवोदारो ययातिरिव धार्मिक: ॥ २४ ॥ ITRANS: sarva-sad-guṇa-māhātmyeeṣa kṛṣṇam anuvrataḥrantideva ivodāroyayātir iva dhārmikaḥ Translation: This child will be almost as good as Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa by following in His footsteps. In magnanimity he will become as great as King Rantideva. And in religion he will be like Mahārāja Yayāti. Purport: The last instruction of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavad-gītā is that one should give up everything and should follow in the footsteps of the Lord alone....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 25 Sanskrit: धृत्या बलिसम: कृष्णे प्रह्राद इव सद्ग्रह: ।आहर्तैषोऽश्वमेधानां वृद्धानां पर्युपासक: ॥ २५ ॥ ITRANS: dhṛtyā bali-samaḥ kṛṣṇeprahrāda iva sad-grahaḥāhartaiṣo ’śvamedhānāṁvṛddhānāṁ paryupāsakaḥ Translation: This child will be like Bali Mahārāja in patience, a staunch devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa like Prahlāda Mahārāja, a performer of many aśvamedha [horse] sacrifices and a follower of the old and experienced men. Purport: Bali Mahārāja: One of the twelve authorities in the devotional service of the Lord....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 26 Sanskrit: राजर्षीणां जनयिता शास्ता चोत्पथगामिनाम् ।निग्रहीता कलेरेष भुवो धर्मस्य कारणात् ॥ २६ ॥ ITRANS: rājarṣīṇāṁ janayitāśāstā cotpatha-gāmināmnigrahītā kaler eṣabhuvo dharmasya kāraṇāt Translation: This child will be the father of kings who will be like sages. For world peace and for the sake of religion, he will be the chastiser of the upstarts and the quarrelsome. Purport: The wisest man in the world is a devotee of the Lord....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 27 Sanskrit: तक्षकादात्मनो मृत्युं द्विजपुत्रोपसर्जितात् ।प्रपत्स्यत उपश्रुत्य मुक्तसङ्ग: पदं हरे: ॥ २७ ॥ ITRANS: takṣakād ātmano mṛtyuṁdvija-putropasarjitātprapatsyata upaśrutyamukta-saṅgaḥ padaṁ hareḥ Translation: After hearing about his death, which will be caused by the bite of a snakebird sent by a son of a brāhmaṇa, he will get himself freed from all material attachment and surrender unto the Personality of Godhead, taking shelter of Him....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 28 Sanskrit: जिज्ञासितात्मयाथार्थ्यो मुनेर्व्याससुतादसौ ।हित्वेदं नृप गङ्गायां यास्यत्यद्धाकुतोभयम् ॥ २८ ॥ ITRANS: jijñāsitātma-yāthārthyomuner vyāsa-sutād asauhitvedaṁ nṛpa gaṅgāyāṁyāsyaty addhākutobhayam Translation: After inquiring about proper self-knowledge from the son of Vyāsadeva, who will be a great philosopher, he will renounce all material attachment and achieve a life of fearlessness. Purport: Material knowledge means ignorance of the knowledge of one’s own self. Philosophy means to seek after the right knowledge of one’s own self, or the knowledge of self-realization....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 29 Sanskrit: इति राज्ञ उपादिश्य विप्रा जातककोविदा: ।लब्धापचितय: सर्वे प्रतिजग्मु: स्वकान् गृहान् ॥ २९ ॥ ITRANS: iti rājña upādiśyaviprā jātaka-kovidāḥlabdhāpacitayaḥ sarvepratijagmuḥ svakān gṛhān Translation: Thus those who were expert in astrological knowledge and in performance of the birth ceremony instructed King Yudhiṣṭhira about the future history of his child. Then, being sumptuously remunerated, they all returned to their respective homes. Purport: The Vedas are the storehouse of knowledge, both material and spiritual....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 30 Sanskrit: स एष लोके विख्यात: परीक्षिदिति यत्प्रभु: ।पूर्वं द‍ृष्टमनुध्यायन् परीक्षेत नरेष्विह ॥ ३० ॥ ITRANS: sa eṣa loke vikhyātaḥparīkṣid iti yat prabhuḥpūrvaṁ dṛṣṭam anudhyāyanparīkṣeta nareṣv iha Translation: So his son would become famous in the world as Parīkṣit [examiner] because he would come to examine all human beings in his search after that personality whom he saw before his birth. Thus he would come to constantly contemplate Him....
