Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 1 Sanskrit: शौनक उवाचअश्वत्थाम्नोपसृष्टेन ब्रह्मशीर्ष्णोरुतेजसा ।उत्तराया हतो गर्भ ईशेनाजीवित: पुन: ॥ १ ॥ ITRANS: śaunaka uvācaaśvatthāmnopasṛṣṭenabrahma-śīrṣṇoru-tejasāuttarāyā hato garbhaīśenājīvitaḥ punaḥ Translation: The sage Śaunaka said: The womb of Uttarā, mother of Mahārāja Parīkṣit, was spoiled by the dreadful and invincible brahmāstra weapon released by Aśvatthāmā. But Mahārāja Parīkṣit was saved by the Supreme Lord. Purport: The sages assembled in the forest of Naimiṣāraṇya inquired from Sūta Gosvāmī about the birth of Mahārāja Parīkṣit, but in the course of the narration other topics like the release of the brahmāstra by the son of Droṇa, his punishment by Arjuna, Queen Kuntīdevī’s prayers, the Pāṇḍavas’ visit to the place where Bhīṣmadeva was lying, his prayers and thereafter the Lord’s departure for Dvārakā were discussed....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 2 Sanskrit: तस्य जन्म महाबुद्धे: कर्माणि च महात्मन: ।निधनं च यथैवासीत्स प्रेत्य गतवान् यथा ॥ २ ॥ ITRANS: tasya janma mahā-buddheḥkarmāṇi ca mahātmanaḥnidhanaṁ ca yathaivāsītsa pretya gatavān yathā Translation: How was the great emperor Parīkṣit, who was a highly intelligent and great devotee, born in that womb? How did his death take place, and what did he achieve after his death? Purport: The king of Hastināpura (now Delhi) used to be the emperor of the world, at least till the time of the son of Emperor Parīkṣit....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 3 Sanskrit: तदिदं श्रोतुमिच्छामो गदितुं यदि मन्यसे ।ब्रूहि न: श्रद्दधानानां यस्य ज्ञानमदाच्छुक: ॥ ३ ॥ ITRANS: tad idaṁ śrotum icchāmogadituṁ yadi manyasebrūhi naḥ śraddadhānānāṁyasya jñānam adāc chukaḥ Translation: We all respectfully want to hear about him [Mahārāja Parīkṣit] to whom Śukadeva Gosvāmī imparted transcendental knowledge. Please speak on this matter. Purport: Śukadeva Gosvāmī imparted transcendental knowledge to Mahārāja Parīkṣit during the remaining seven days of his life, and Mahārāja Parīkṣit heard him properly, just like an ardent student....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 4 Sanskrit: सूत उवाचअपीपलद्धर्मराज: पितृवद् रञ्जयन् प्रजा: ।नि:स्पृह: सर्वकामेभ्य: कृष्णपादानुसेवया ॥ ४ ॥ ITRANS: sūta uvācaapīpalad dharma-rājaḥpitṛvad rañjayan prajāḥniḥspṛhaḥ sarva-kāmebhyaḥkṛṣṇa-pādānusevayā Translation: Śrī Sūta Gosvāmī said: Emperor Yudhiṣṭhira administered generously to everyone during his reign. He was exactly like his father. He had no personal ambition and was freed from all sorts of sense gratification because of his continuous service unto the lotus feet of the Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 5 Sanskrit: सम्पद: क्रतवो लोका महिषी भ्रातरो मही ।जम्बूद्वीपाधिपत्यं च यशश्च त्रिदिवं गतम् ॥ ५ ॥ ITRANS: sampadaḥ kratavo lokāmahiṣī bhrātaro mahījambudvīpādhipatyaṁ cayaśaś ca tri-divaṁ gatam Translation: News even reached the celestial planets about Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira’s worldly possessions, the sacrifices by which he would attain a better destination, his queen, his stalwart brothers, his extensive land, his sovereignty over the planet earth, his fame, etc....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 6 Sanskrit: किं ते कामा: सुरस्पार्हा मुकुन्दमनसो द्विजा: ।अधिजह्रुर्मुदं राज्ञ: क्षुधितस्य यथेतरे ॥ ६ ॥ ITRANS: kiṁ te kāmāḥ sura-spārhāmukunda-manaso dvijāḥadhijahrur mudaṁ rājñaḥkṣudhitasya yathetare Translation: O brāhmaṇas, the opulence of the King was so enchanting that the denizens of heaven aspired for it. But because he was absorbed in the service of the Lord, nothing could satisfy him except the Lord’s service....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 7 Sanskrit: मातुर्गर्भगतो वीर: स तदा भृगुनन्दन ।ददर्श पुरुषं कञ्चिद्दह्यमानोऽस्त्रतेजसा ॥ ७ ॥ ITRANS: mātur garbha-gato vīraḥsa tadā bhṛgu-nandanadadarśa puruṣaṁ kañciddahyamāno ’stra-tejasā Translation: O son of Bhṛgu [Śaunaka], when the child Parīkṣit, the great fighter, was in the womb of his mother, Uttarā, and was suffering from the burning heat of the brahmāstra [thrown by Aśvatthāmā], he could observe the Supreme Lord coming to him....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 8 Sanskrit: अङ्गुष्ठमात्रममलं स्फुरत्पुरटमौलिनम् ।अपीव्यदर्शनं श्यामं तडिद्वाससमच्युतम् ॥ ८ ॥ ITRANS: aṅguṣṭha-mātram amalaṁsphurat-puraṭa-maulinamapīvya-darśanaṁ śyāmaṁtaḍid vāsasam acyutam Translation: He [the Lord] was only thumb high, but He was all transcendental. He had a very beautiful, blackish, infallible body, and He wore a dress of lightning yellow and a helmet of blazing gold. Thus He was seen by the child. Purport:

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 9 Sanskrit: श्रीमद्दीर्घचतुर्बाहुं तप्तकाञ्चनकुण्डलम् ।क्षतजाक्षं गदापाणिमात्मन: सर्वतोदिशम् ।परिभ्रमन्तमुल्काभां भ्रामयन्तं गदां मुहु: ॥ ९ ॥ ITRANS: śrīmad-dīrgha-catur-bāhuṁtapta-kāñcana-kuṇḍalamkṣatajākṣaṁ gadā-pāṇimātmanaḥ sarvato diśamparibhramantam ulkābhāṁbhrāmayantaṁ gadāṁ muhuḥ Translation: The Lord was enriched with four hands, earrings of molten gold and eyes blood red with fury. As He loitered about, His club constantly encircled Him like a shooting star. Purport: It is said in the Brahma-saṁhitā (ch. 5) that the Supreme Lord Govinda, by His one plenary portion, enters into the halo of the universe and distributes Himself as Paramātmā, or the Supersoul, not only within the heart of every living being, but also within every atom of the material elements....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 10 Sanskrit: अस्त्रतेज: स्वगदया नीहारमिव गोपति: ।विधमन्तं सन्निकर्षे पर्यैक्षत क इत्यसौ ॥ १० ॥ ITRANS: astra-tejaḥ sva-gadayānīhāram iva gopatiḥvidhamantaṁ sannikarṣeparyaikṣata ka ity asau Translation: The Lord was thus engaged in vanquishing the radiation of the brahmāstra, just as the sun evaporates a drop of dew. He was observed by the child, who thought about who He was. Purport:

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 11 Sanskrit: विधूय तदमेयात्मा भगवान्धर्मगुब् विभु: ।मिषतो दशमासस्य तत्रैवान्तर्दधे हरि: ॥ ११ ॥ ITRANS: vidhūya tad ameyātmābhagavān dharma-gub vibhuḥmiṣato daśamāsasyatatraivāntardadhe hariḥ Translation: While thus being observed by the child, the Supreme Lord Personality of Godhead, the Supersoul of everyone and the protector of the righteous, who stretches in all directions and who is unlimited by time and space, disappeared at once. Purport: Child Parīkṣit was not observing a living being who is limited by time and space....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 12 Sanskrit: तत: सर्वगुणोदर्के सानुकूलग्रहोदये ।जज्ञे वंशधर: पाण्डोर्भूय: पाण्डुरिवौजसा ॥ १२ ॥ ITRANS: tataḥ sarva-guṇodarkesānukūla-grahodayejajñe vaṁśa-dharaḥ pāṇḍorbhūyaḥ pāṇḍur ivaujasā Translation: Thereupon, when all the good signs of the zodiac gradually evolved, the heir apparent of Pāṇḍu, who would be exactly like him in prowess, took birth. Purport: Astronomical calculations of stellar influences upon a living being are not suppositions, but are factual, as confirmed in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 13 Sanskrit: तस्य प्रीतमना राजा विप्रैर्धौम्यकृपादिभि: ।जातकं कारयामास वाचयित्वा च मङ्गलम् ॥ १३ ॥ ITRANS: tasya prīta-manā rājāviprair dhaumya-kṛpādibhiḥjātakaṁ kārayām āsavācayitvā ca maṅgalam Translation: King Yudhiṣṭhira, who was very satisfied with the birth of Mahārāja Parīkṣit, had the purificatory process of birth performed. Learned brāhmaṇas, headed by Dhaumya and Kṛpa, recited auspicious hymns. Purport: There is a need for a good and intelligent class of brāhmaṇas who are expert in performing the purificatory processes prescribed in the system of varṇāśrama-dharma....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 14 Sanskrit: हिरण्यं गां महीं ग्रामान् हस्त्यश्वान्नृपतिर्वरान् ।प्रादात्स्वन्नं च विप्रेभ्य: प्रजातीर्थे स तीर्थवित् ॥ १४ ॥ ITRANS: hiraṇyaṁ gāṁ mahīṁ grāmānhasty-aśvān nṛpatir varānprādāt svannaṁ ca viprebhyaḥprajā-tīrthe sa tīrthavit Translation: Upon the birth of a son, the King, who knew how, where and when charity should be given, gave gold, land, villages, elephants, horses and good food grains to the brāhmaṇas. Purport: Only the brāhmaṇas and sannyāsīs are authorized to accept charity from the householders....

Srimad-Bhagavatam: Canto 1 - Chapter 1 - Verse 15 Sanskrit: तमूचुर्ब्राह्मणास्तुष्टा राजानं प्रश्रयान्वितम् ।एष ह्यस्मिन् प्रजातन्तौ पुरूणां पौरवर्षभ ॥ १५ ॥ ITRANS: tam ūcur brāhmaṇās tuṣṭārājānaṁ praśrayānvitameṣa hy asmin prajā-tantaupurūṇāṁ pauravarṣabha Translation: The learned brāhmaṇas, who were very satisfied with the charities of the King, addressed him as the chief amongst the Pūrus and informed him that his son was certainly in the line of descent from the Pūrus.
