Text: Rig Veda Book 10 Hymn 18 परं मर्त्यो अनु परेहि पन्थां यस्ते सव इतरो देवयानात | चक्षुष्मते शर्ण्वते ते बरवीमि मा नः परजां रीरिषोमोत वीरान || मर्त्योः पदं योपयन्तो यदैत दराघीय आयुः परतरन्दधानाः | आप्यायमानाः परजया धनेन शुद्धाःपूता भवत यज्ञियासः || इमे जीवा वि मर्तैरावव्र्त्रन्नभूद भद्रा देवहूतिर्नोद्य | पराञ्चो अगाम नर्तये हसाय दराघीय आयुःप्रतरं दधानाः || इमं जीवेभ्यः परिधिं दधामि मैषां नु गादपरोर्थमेतम | शतं जीवन्तु शरदः पुरूचीरन्तर्म्र्त्युं दधतां पर्वतेन || यथाहान्यनुपूर्वं भवन्ति यथ रतव रतुभिर्यन्तिसाधु | यथा न पूर्वमपरो जहात्येवा धातरायूंषि कल्पयैषाम || आ रोहतायुर्जरसं वर्णाना अनुपूर्वं यतमाना यतिष्ठ | इह तवष्टा सुजनिमा सजोषा दीर्घमायुःकरति जीवसे वः || इमा नारीरविधवाः सुपत्नीराञ्जनेन सर्पिषा संविशन्तु | अनश्रवो....
Shloka ज्ञानं कर्म च कर्ताच त्रिधैव गुणभेदतः | प्रोच्यते गुणसङ्ख्याने यथावच्छृणु तान्यपि ||१८-१९|| Transliteration jñānaṃ karma ca kartāca tridhaiva guṇabhedataḥ . procyate guṇasaṅkhyāne yathāvacchṛṇu tānyapi ||18-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 18.19. The instrument of knowledge, the object and the agent are just three kinds because of the differences in the Strands-thus it is declared in enumerating the Strands. Shloka मूढग्राहेणात्मनो यत्पीडया क्रियते तपः | परस्योत्सादनार्थं वा तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् ||१७-१९|| Transliteration mūḍhagrāheṇātmano yatpīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ . parasyotsādanārthaṃ vā tattāmasamudāhṛtam ||17-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 17.19. What austerity is practised with foolish obstinacy [and] with self-torture only in order to destroy other person-that is declared to be of the Tamas. Shri Purohit Swami 17.19 Austerity done under delusion, and accompanied with sorcery or torture to oneself or another, may be assumed to spring from Ignorance....
Shloka तानहं द्विषतः क्रुरान्संसारेषु नराधमान् | क्षिपाम्यजस्रमशुभानासुरीष्वेव योनिषु ||१६-१९|| Transliteration tānahaṃ dviṣataḥ krurānsaṃsāreṣu narādhamān . kṣipāmyajasramaśubhānāsurīṣveva yoniṣu ||16-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 16.19. These hateful, cruel, basest men, I hurl incessantly into the inauspicious demoniac wombs alone in the cycle of birth-and-death. Shloka यो मामेवमसम्मूढो जानाति पुरुषोत्तमम् | स सर्वविद्भजति मां सर्वभावेन भारत ||१५-१९|| Transliteration yo māmevamasammūḍho jānāti puruṣottamam . sa sarvavidbhajati māṃ sarvabhāvena bhārata ||15-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 15.19. He, who, being not deluded, thus knows Me as the Highest of persons - he knows all and serves Me with his entire being, O descendant of Bharata ! Shri Purohit Swami 15.19 He who with unclouded vision sees Me as the Lord-God, knows all there is to be known, and always shall worship Me with his whole heart....
Shloka नान्यं गुणेभ्यः कर्तारं यदा द्रष्टानुपश्यति | गुणेभ्यश्च परं वेत्ति मद्भावं सोऽधिगच्छति ||१४-१९|| Transliteration nānyaṃ guṇebhyaḥ kartāraṃ yadā draṣṭānupaśyati . guṇebhyaśca paraṃ vetti madbhāvaṃ so.adhigacchati ||14-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 14.19. When the Perceiver (the Self) finds no agent other than the Strands, and realises That which is beyond the Strands, then he attains My state. Shri Purohit Swami 14.19 As soon as man understands that it is only the Qualities which act and nothing else, and perceives That which is beyond, he attains My divine nature....
Shloka इति क्षेत्रं तथा ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं चोक्तं समासतः | मद्भक्त एतद्विज्ञाय मद्भावायोपपद्यते ||१३-१९|| Transliteration iti kṣetraṃ tathā jñānaṃ jñeyaṃ coktaṃ samāsataḥ . madbhakta etadvijñāya madbhāvāyopapadyate ||13-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 13.19. This field as well as the knowledge and what is to be known, all are mentioned collectively; clearly understanding this, My devotee becomes worthy of My state. Shri Purohit Swami 13.19 Thus I have told thee in brief what Matter is, and the Self worth realising and what is Wisdom....
Shloka तुल्यनिन्दास्तुतिर्मौनी सन्तुष्टो येन केनचित् | अनिकेतः स्थिरमतिर्भक्तिमान्मे प्रियो नरः ||१२-१९|| Transliteration tulyanindāstutirmaunī santuṣṭo yena kenacit . aniketaḥ sthiramatirbhaktimānme priyo naraḥ ||12-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 12.19. To whom blame and praise are eal; who is silent (does not over-speak) and is well content with one thing or other [that comes to him]; who has no fixed thought [in the mundane life]; who is [yet] steady-minded [in spiritual practice] and is full of devotion-that man is dear to Me....
Shloka अनादिमध्यान्तमनन्तवीर्य- मनन्तबाहुं शशिसूर्यनेत्रम् | पश्यामि त्वां दीप्तहुताशवक्त्रं स्वतेजसा विश्वमिदं तपन्तम् ||११-१९|| Transliteration anādimadhyāntamanantavīryam anantabāhuṃ śaśisūryanetram . paśyāmi tvāṃ dīptahutāśavaktraṃ svatejasā viśvamidaṃ tapantam ||11-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 11.19. I observe You having to beginning, no middle and no end; having infinite creative power, and infinite arms; as havig the moon and the sun for Your eyes, and the blazing fire for Your mouth; [and] as acorching this universe with Your rediance....
Shloka श्रीभगवानुवाच | हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतयः | प्राधान्यतः कुरुश्रेष्ठ नास्त्यन्तो विस्तरस्य मे ||१०-१९|| Transliteration śrībhagavānuvāca . hanta te kathayiṣyāmi divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ . prādhānyataḥ kuruśreṣṭha nāstyanto vistarasya me ||10-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 10.19. The Bhagavat said Yes. O the best among the Kurus ! I shall expound to you, only the chief auspicious manifesting powers of Mine. For, there would be no end to My details. Shri Purohit Swami 10.19 Lord Shri Krishna replied: So be it, My beloved fried!...
Shloka तपाम्यहमहं वर्षं निगृह्णाम्युत्सृजामि च | अमृतं चैव मृत्युश्च सदसच्चाहमर्जुन ||९-१९|| Transliteration tapāmyahamahaṃ varṣaṃ nigṛhṇāmyutsṛjāmi ca . amṛtaṃ caiva mṛtyuśca sadasaccāhamarjuna ||9-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 9.19. I give heat; I hold back and also end forth rains; I am immortality and also death, the real and also the unreal, O Arjuna ! Shri Purohit Swami 9.19 I am the Heat of the Sun, I release and hold back the Rains. I am Death and Immortality; I am Being and Not-Being....
Shloka भूतग्रामः स एवायं भूत्वा भूत्वा प्रलीयते | रात्र्यागमेऽवशः पार्थ प्रभवत्यहरागमे ||८-१९|| Transliteration bhūtagrāmaḥ sa evāyaṃ bhūtvā bhūtvā pralīyate . rātryāgame.avaśaḥ pārtha prabhavatyaharāgame ||8-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 8.19. Being born and born again, the self same multitude of beings gets dissolved while the night approaches, and issues forth willy-nilly while the day approaches, O son of Prtha ! Shri Purohit Swami 8.19 The same multitude of beings, which have lived on earth so often, all are dissolved as the night of the universe approaches, to issue forth anew when morning breaks....
Shloka बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते | वासुदेवः सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः ||७-१९|| Transliteration bahūnāṃ janmanāmante jñānavānmāṃ prapadyate . vāsudevaḥ sarvamiti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ ||7-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 7.19. At the end of many births, one attains Me with the conviction that ‘All is Vasudeva’ - that noble Soul is very difficult to get. Shri Purohit Swami 7.19 After many lives, at last the wise man realises Me as I am. A man so enlightened that he sees God everywhere is very difficult to find....
Shloka यथा दीपो निवातस्थो नेङ्गते सोपमा स्मृता | योगिनो यतचित्तस्य युञ्जतो योगमात्मनः ||६-१९|| Transliteration yathā dīpo nivātastho neṅgate sopamā smṛtā . yogino yatacittasya yuñjato yogamātmanaḥ ||6-19|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 6.19. ‘Just as a lamp in the windless place does not shake’ - This simile is recalled in the case of the man of Yoga, with subdued mind, practising the Yoga in the Self. Shri Purohit Swami 6.19 The wise man who has conquered his mind and is absorbed in the Self is as a lamp which does not flicker, since it stands sheltered from every wind....
