Shloka अवजानन्ति मां मूढा मानुषीं तनुमाश्रितम् | परं भावमजानन्तो मम भूतमहेश्वरम् ||९-११|| Transliteration avajānanti māṃ mūḍhā mānuṣīṃ tanumāśritam . paraṃ bhāvamajānanto mama bhūtamaheśvaram ||9-11|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 9.11. Being unaware of the immutable highest Absolute Supreme nature of Mine, the deluded ones disregard Me dwelling in the human body. Shri Purohit Swami 9.11 Fools disregard Me, seeing Me clad in human form. They know not that in My higher nature I am the Lord-God of all....

Shloka यदक्षरं वेदविदो वदन्ति विशन्ति यद्यतयो वीतरागाः | यदिच्छन्तो ब्रह्मचर्यं चरन्ति तत्ते पदं संग्रहेण प्रवक्ष्ये ||८-११|| Transliteration yadakṣaraṃ vedavido vadanti viśanti yadyatayo vītarāgāḥ . yadicchanto brahmacaryaṃ caranti tatte padaṃ saṃgraheṇa pravakṣye ||8-11|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 8.11. That Unchanging One which the Veda-knowers speak of; Which the passion-free ascetics enter into; seeking Which they practise celibacy (or spiritual life); that Goal together with means [to reach It] I shall tell you. Shloka बलं बलवतां चाहं कामरागविवर्जितम् | धर्माविरुद्धो भूतेषु कामोऽस्मि भरतर्षभ ||७-११|| Transliteration balaṃ balavatāṃ cāhaṃ kāmarāgavivarjitam . dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo.asmi bharatarṣabha ||7-11|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 7.11. Of the strong, I am the strength that is free from desire and attachment. O best of the Bharatas, in [all] beings I am the desire which is not opposed to attributes. Shri Purohit Swami 7.11 I am the Strength of the strong, of them who are free from attachment and desire; and, O Arjuna, I am the Desire for righteousness....

Shloka शुचौ देशे प्रतिष्ठाप्य स्थिरमासनमात्मनः | नात्युच्छ्रितं नातिनीचं चैलाजिनकुशोत्तरम् ||६-११|| Transliteration śucau deśe pratiṣṭhāpya sthiramāsanamātmanaḥ . nātyucchritaṃ nātinīcaṃ cailājinakuśottaram ||6-11|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 6.11. Setting up in a clean place his own [suitable] firm seat which is predominantly of cloth, skin and kusa-grass, and which, is neither too high nor too low for him; Shri Purohit Swami 6.11 Having chosen a holy place, let him sit in a firm posture on a seat, neither too high nor too low, and covered with a grass mat, a deer skin and a cloth....

Shloka कायेन मनसा बुद्ध्या केवलैरिन्द्रियैरपि | योगिनः कर्म कुर्वन्ति सङ्गं त्यक्त्वात्मशुद्धये ||५-११|| Transliteration kāyena manasā buddhyā kevalairindriyairapi . yoginaḥ karma kurvanti saṅgaṃ tyaktvātmaśuddhaye ||5-11|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 5.11. Having given up attachment, the men of Yoga perform action, just with the body, with the mind, with intellect and also with sense-organs, for attaining the Self. Shri Purohit Swami 5.11 The sage performs his action dispassionately, using his body, mind and intellect, and even his senses, always as a means of purification....

Shloka ये यथा मां प्रपद्यन्ते तांस्तथैव भजाम्यहम् | मम वर्त्मानुवर्तन्ते मनुष्याः पार्थ सर्वशः ||४-११|| Transliteration ye yathā māṃ prapadyante tāṃstathaiva bhajāmyaham . mama vartmānuvartante manuṣyāḥ pārtha sarvaśaḥ ||4-11|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 4.11. The way in which men resort to Me, in the same way I favour them. O son of Prtha, all sorts of men follow the path of Mine. Shri Purohit Swami 4.11 Howsoever men try to worship Me, so do I welcome them....

Shloka देवान्भावयतानेन ते देवा भावयन्तु वः | परस्परं भावयन्तः श्रेयः परमवाप्स्यथ ||३-११|| Transliteration devānbhāvayatānena te devā bhāvayantu vaḥ . parasparaṃ bhāvayantaḥ śreyaḥ paramavāpsyatha ||3-11|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 3.11. ‘With this you must gratify the devas and let the devas gratify you; [thus] gratifying one another, you shall attain the highest good.’ Shri Purohit Swami 3.11 Worship the Powers of Nature thereby, and let them nourish you in return; thus supporting each other, you shall attain your highest welfare....

Shloka श्रीभगवानुवाच | अशोच्यानन्वशोचस्त्वं प्रज्ञावादांश्च भाषसे | गतासूनगतासूंश्च नानुशोचन्ति पण्डिताः ||२-११|| Transliteration śrībhagavānuvāca . aśocyānanvaśocastvaṃ prajñāvādāṃśca bhāṣase . gatāsūnagatāsūṃśca nānuśocanti paṇḍitāḥ ||2-11|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 2.11. While lamenting for those who cannot be lamented on and those who do not reire to be lamented on, you do not talk like a wise man ! The learned do not lament for those of departed life and those of non-departed life. Shri Purohit Swami 2....

Shloka अयनेषु च सर्वेषु यथाभागमवस्थिताः | भीष्ममेवाभिरक्षन्तु भवन्तः सर्व एव हि ||१-११|| Transliteration ayaneṣu ca sarveṣu yathābhāgamavasthitāḥ . bhīṣmamevābhirakṣantu bhavantaḥ sarva eva hi ||1-11|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 1.11. Stationed firmly in all [your] respective paths, every one of you without exception should guard Bhisma, above all. Shri Purohit Swami 1.11 Therefore in the rank and file, let stand firm in their posts, according to battalions; and all you generals about Bheeshma....

Text: यथा पुरस्ताद्भविता प्रतीत अउद्दालकिरारुणिर्मत्प्रसृष्टः । सुखँ रात्रीः शयिता वीतमन्युःत्वां ददृशिवान्मृत्युमुखात्प्रमुक्तम् ॥ ११ ॥ yathā purastādbhavitā pratīta auddālakirāruṇirmatprasṛṣṭaḥ || sukham̐ rātrīḥ śayitā vītamanyuḥtvāṃ dadṛśivānmṛtyumukhātpramuktam || 11 || 11. (Death replies) Auddalaki, the son of Aruna will recognise you, as before, with my permission, will sleep during nights in peace and when he sees you returned from the jaws of Death, will lose his wrath. Shankara’s Commentary: Death replied ‘just as your father’s heart was affectionate towards you before, so your father Auddalaki, the son of Aruna (or the Dvyamushyayana, son of both Uddalaka and Aruna), will be affectionate towards you and confide in you with my permission; he will sleep the rest of the nights in peace of mind and will lose his wrath when he sees you released from the jaws of Death....

Text: कामस्याप्तिं जगतः प्रतिष्ठां क्रतोरानन्त्यमभयस्य पारं । स्तोममहदुरुगायं प्रतिष्ठां दृष्ट्वा धृत्या धीरो नचिकेतोऽत्यस्राक्शीः ॥ ११ ॥ kāmasyāptiṃ jagataḥ pratiṣṭhāṃ kratorānantyamabhayasya pāraṃ । stomamahadurugāyaṃ pratiṣṭhāṃ dṛṣṭvā dhṛtyā dhīro naciketo’tyasrākśīḥ ॥ 11 ॥ 11. The end of all desires, the stay of all the universe, the endless fruit of worship, the other shore of fearlessness, the praiseworthy, the great and boundless goal, all these hast thou beheld, and being intelligent, Oh Nachiketas, hast boldly rejected all....

Text: महतः परमव्यक्तमव्यक्तात्पुरुषः परः । पुरुषान्न परं किंचित्सा काष्ठा सा परा गतिः ॥ ११ ॥ mahataḥ paramavyaktamavyaktātpuruṣaḥ paraḥ | puruṣānna paraṃ kiṃcitsā kāṣṭhā sā parā gatiḥ || 11 || Beyond the great Ātman is the Unmanifested; beyond the Unmanifested is the Puruṣa (the Cosmic Soul); beyond the Puruṣa there is nothing. That is the end that is the final goal. NOTE: Tranlsation and commentary is missing from the book. The alternate translation for the verse presented above is from Swami Paramananda....

Text: मनसैवेदमाप्तव्यन्नेह नानास्ति किंचन । मृत्योः स मृत्युं गच्छति य इह नानेव पश्यति ॥ ११ ॥ manasaivedamāptavyanneha nānāsti kiṃcana | mṛtyoḥ sa mṛtyuṃ gacchati ya iha nāneva paśyati || 11 || 11. By mind alone could this be obtained, there is no difference here at all. He goes from death to death who sees as if there were difference here. Shankara’s Commentary: Before attaining the knowledge of the oneness, by the mind purified by the sastras and by the preceptor, this unalloyed essence of the Brahman should be attained in the form ‘There is the Brahman alone, nothing else exists....

Text: सूर्यो यथा सर्वलोकस्य चक्शुर्न लिप्यते चाक्शुषैर्बाह्यदोषैः । एकस्तथा सर्वभूतान्तरात्मा न लिप्यते लोकदुःखेन बाह्यः ॥ ११ ॥ sūryo yathā sarvalokasya cakśurna lipyate cākśuṣairbāhyadoṣaiḥ | ekastathā sarvabhūtāntarātmā na lipyate lokaduḥkhena bāhyaḥ || 11 || 11. As the sun, the eye of all the world, is not tainted with the stains in external objects seen by the eyes, so, the one internal atman of all living things is not tainted with the world’s grief, being external to it....

Text: तां योगमिति मन्यन्ते स्थिरामिन्द्रियधारणाम् । अप्रमत्तस्तदा भवति योगो हि प्रभवाप्ययौ ॥ ११ ॥ tāṃ yogamiti manyante sthirāmindriyadhāraṇām | apramattastadā bhavati yogo hi prabhavāpyayau || 11 || This firm holding back of the senses is what is known as Yoga. Then one should become watchful, for Yoga comes and goes. NOTE: Tranlsation and commentary is missing from the book.
