Text: Rig Veda Book 10 Hymn 9 आपो हि षठा मयोभुवस्ता न ऊर्जे दधातन | महेरणाय चक्षसे || यो वः शिवतमो रसस्तस्य भजयतेह नः | उशतीरिवमातरः || तस्मा अरं गमाम वो यस्य कषयाय जिन्वथ | आपोजनयथा च नः || शं नो देवीरभिष्टय आपो भवन्तु पीतये | शं योरभि सरवन्तु नः || ईशाना वार्याणां कषयन्तीश्चर्षणीनाम | अपोयाचामि भेषजम || अप्सु मे सोमो अब्रवीदन्तर्विश्वानि भेषजा | अग्निं चविश्वशम्भुवम || आपः पर्णीत भेषजां वरूथं तन्वे मम | जयोक चसूर्यं दर्शे || इदमापः पर वहत यत किं च दुरितं मयि | यद वाहमभिदुद्रोह यद व शेप उतान्र्तम || आपो अद्यान्वचारिषं रसेन समगस्महि | पयस्वानग्ना गहि तं मा सं सर्ज वर्चसा ||...

agre bṛhann uṣasām ūrdhvo asthān nirjaganvān tamaso jyotiṣāgāt | agnir bhānunā ruśatā svaṅga ā jāto viśvā sadmāny aprāḥ || RV_10,001.01 sa jāto garbho asi rodasyor agne cārur vibhṛta oṣadhīṣu | citraḥ śiśuḥ pari tamāṁsy aktūn pra mātṛbhyo adhi kanikradad gāḥ || RV_10,001.02 viṣṇur itthā paramam asya vidvāñ jāto bṛhann abhi pāti tṛtīyam | āsā yad asya payo akrata svaṁ sacetaso abhy arcanty atra || RV_10,001.03 ata u tvā pitubhṛto janitrīr annāvṛdham prati caranty annaiḥ | tā īm praty eṣi punar anyarūpā asi tvaṁ vikṣu mānuṣīṣu hotā || RV_10,001....

Shloka न द्वेष्ट्यकुशलं कर्म कुशले नानुषज्जते | त्यागी सत्त्वसमाविष्टो मेधावी छिन्नसंशयः ||१८-१०|| Transliteration na dveṣṭyakuśalaṃ karma kuśale nānuṣajjate . tyāgī sattvasamāviṣṭo medhāvī chinnasaṃśayaḥ ||18-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 18.10. The man of relinishment, who is well possessed of the Sattva, is wise and has his doubts destroyed-he hates not the unskilled action and clings not to the skilled action. Shri Purohit Swami 18.10 The wise man who has attained purity, whose doubts are solved, who is filled with the spirit of self-abnegation, does not shrink from action because it brings pain, nor does he desire it because it brings pleasure....

Shloka यातयामं गतरसं पूति पर्युषितं च यत् | उच्छिष्टमपि चामेध्यं भोजनं तामसप्रियम् ||१७-१०|| Transliteration yātayāmaṃ gatarasaṃ pūti paryuṣitaṃ ca yat . ucchiṣṭamapi cāmedhyaṃ bhojanaṃ tāmasapriyam ||17-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 17.10. What is old, bereft of taste, ill-smelling, and stale; what is also left after eating, and is impure - such a food is dear to the men of the Tamas (Strand). Shri Purohit Swami 17.10 The Ignorant love food which is stale, not nourishing, putrid and corrupt, the leavings of others and unclean....

Shloka काममाश्रित्य दुष्पूरं दम्भमानमदान्विताः | मोहाद्गृहीत्वासद्ग्राहान्प्रवर्तन्तेऽशुचिव्रताः ||१६-१०|| Transliteration kāmamāśritya duṣpūraṃ dambhamānamadānvitāḥ . mohādgṛhītvāsadgrāhānpravartante.aśucivratāḥ ||16-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 16.10. Holding to their insatiable desire; being possessed by hypocricy, avarice, and pride; and holding evil intention, these cruel men wander with impure resolve. Shri Purohit Swami 16.10 Giving themselves up to insatiable passions, hypocritical, self-sufficient and arrogant, cherishing false conception founded on delusion, they work only to carry out their own unholy purposes....

Shloka उत्क्रामन्तं स्थितं वापि भुञ्जानं वा गुणान्वितम् | विमूढा नानुपश्यन्ति पश्यन्ति ज्ञानचक्षुषः ||१५-१०|| Transliteration utkrāmantaṃ sthitaṃ vāpi bhuñjānaṃ vā guṇānvitam . vimūḍhā nānupaśyanti paśyanti jñānacakṣuṣaḥ ||15-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 15.10. The deluded do not perceive; [but] the men of knowledge-eye do see Him, as He dwells of rises up or enjoys what is endowed with Strands. Shri Purohit Swami 15.10 The ignorant do not see that it is He Who is present in life and Who departs at death or even that it is He Who enjoys pleasure through the Qualities....

Shloka रजस्तमश्चाभिभूय सत्त्वं भवति भारत | रजः सत्त्वं तमश्चैव तमः सत्त्वं रजस्तथा ||१४-१०|| Transliteration rajastamaścābhibhūya sattvaṃ bhavati bhārata . rajaḥ sattvaṃ tamaścaiva tamaḥ sattvaṃ rajastathā ||14-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 14.10. O descendant of Bharata ! The Sattva increases by overpowering the Rajas and the Tamas; the Rajas [increases by overpowering] the Sattva and the Tamas; and the Tamas does likewise [by overpowering] the Sattva and the Rajas. Shri Purohit Swami 14.10 O Prince!...

Shloka असक्तिरनभिष्वङ्गः पुत्रदारगृहादिषु | नित्यं च समचित्तत्वमिष्टानिष्टोपपत्तिषु ||१३-१०|| Transliteration asaktiranabhiṣvaṅgaḥ putradāragṛhādiṣu . nityaṃ ca samacittatvamiṣṭāniṣṭopapattiṣu ||13-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 13.10. Non-attachment; detachment towards [one’s] children, wives, houses and the like; and a constant eal-mindedness on the occurrence of the desirable and the undesirable things; Shri Purohit Swami 13.10 Indifference, non-attachment to sex, progeny or home, equanimity in good fortune and in bad; Sri Abhinav Gupta 13.10 See Comment under 13.12 Sri Ramanuja 13....

Shloka अभ्यासेऽप्यसमर्थोऽसि मत्कर्मपरमो भव | मदर्थमपि कर्माणि कुर्वन्सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि ||१२-१०|| Transliteration abhyāse.apyasamartho.asi matkarmaparamo bhava . madarthamapi karmāṇi kurvansiddhimavāpsyasi ||12-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 12.10. If you are incapable of doing a [steady] practice, then have, your chief aim, of performing actions for Me. Even by performing actions for Me, You shall attain success. Shri Purohit Swami 12.10 And if thou are not strong enough to practise concentration, then devote thyself to My service, do all thine acts for My sake, and thou shalt still attain the goal....

Shloka अनेकवक्त्रनयनमनेकाद्भुतदर्शनम् | अनेकदिव्याभरणं दिव्यानेकोद्यतायुधम् ||११-१०|| Transliteration anekavaktranayanamanekādbhutadarśanam . anekadivyābharaṇaṃ divyānekodyatāyudham ||11-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 11.10. That has many mouths and eyes, many wondrous sights, many heavenly ornaments, and many heavenly weapons held ready; Shri Purohit Swami 11.10 There were countless eyes and mouths, and mystic forms innumerable, with shining ornaments and flaming celestial weapons. Sri Abhinav Gupta 11.10 Sri Abhinavagupta did not comment upon this sloka. Sri Ramanuja 11.10 - 11....

Shloka तेषां सततयुक्तानां भजतां प्रीतिपूर्वकम् | ददामि बुद्धियोगं तं येन मामुपयान्ति ते ||१०-१०|| Transliteration teṣāṃ satatayuktānāṃ bhajatāṃ prītipūrvakam . dadāmi buddhiyogaṃ taṃ yena māmupayānti te ||10-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 10.10. To these persons, who are [thus] mingling [with Me] and revere [Me] with love, I grant that knowledge-Yoga by means of which they reach Me. Shri Purohit Swami 10.10 To those who are always devout and who worship Me with love, I give the power of discrimination, which leads them to Me....

Shloka मयाध्यक्षेण प्रकृतिः सूयते सचराचरम् | हेतुनानेन कौन्तेय जगद्विपरिवर्तते ||९-१०|| Transliteration mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sacarācaram . hetunānena kaunteya jagadviparivartate ||9-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 9.10. O son of Kunti ! On account of Me, Who remain (only) as an observer and as prime cause, the nature [of Mine] gives birth to [both] the moving and unmoving; hence this world moves in a circle. Shri Purohit Swami 9.10 Under my guidance, Nature produces all things movable and immovable....

Shloka प्रयाणकाले मनसाऽचलेन भक्त्या युक्तो योगबलेन चैव | भ्रुवोर्मध्ये प्राणमावेश्य सम्यक् स तं परं पुरुषमुपैति दिव्यम् ||८-१०|| Transliteration prayāṇakāle manasā.acalena bhaktyā yukto yogabalena caiva . bhruvormadhye prāṇamāveśya samyak sa taṃ paraṃ puruṣamupaiti divyam ||8-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 8.10. That person endowed with a steady mind, with devotion and also with the Yoga-power, reaches at the time of journey that Supreme Divine Soul, by fixing properly the life-breath in between his eye brows....

Shloka बीजं मां सर्वभूतानां विद्धि पार्थ सनातनम् | बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतामस्मि तेजस्तेजस्विनामहम् ||७-१०|| Transliteration bījaṃ māṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ viddhi pārtha sanātanam . buddhirbuddhimatāmasmi tejastejasvināmaham ||7-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 7.10. O son of Prtha ! Know Me as the eternal seed of all beings; I am the intellect of the intellectuals and the brillinace of the brilliant. Shri Purohit Swami 7.10 Know, O Arjuna, that I am the eternal Seed of being; I am the Intelligence of the intelligent, the Splendour of the resplendent....

Shloka योगी युञ्जीत सततमात्मानं रहसि स्थितः | एकाकी यतचित्तात्मा निराशीरपरिग्रहः ||६-१०|| Transliteration yogī yuñjīta satatamātmānaṃ rahasi sthitaḥ . ekākī yatacittātmā nirāśīraparigrahaḥ ||6-10|| Translations Dr.S.Sankaranarayan 6.10. Let the man of Yoga yoke always the self (mind) by remaining alone in a lonely place, with his mind and self (body) controlled, without desire and without the sense of possession. Shri Purohit Swami 6.10 Let the student of spirituality try unceasingly to concentrate his mind; Let him live in seclusion, absolutely alone, with mind and personality controlled, free from desire and without possessions....
